About This Presentation

This is a presentation based on the topic Apiculture for the students of class 8th or 9th students who are studying about crop production and it's management or food resources. All the things are based on NCERT(Biology Class 9) along with some MCQs and an interactive video from INFINITY LEARN-NE...

APICULTURE: THE ART AND SCIENCE OF BEEKEEPING DAV PUBLIC SCHOOL SCHOOL UNIT-8 BHUBANESWAR IX-D

APICULTURE Basic Idea about Apiculture Apiculture is the scientific practice of rearing, breeding, and managing honeybees in artificial hives for the purpose of obtaining honey, beeswax, and other bee products, as well as for pollination of crops. Honey Bee-hive ( The place where the bees store their collection of honey) Uses of Bee-Venom This is an apiary where the honey bees are taken care off.

TYPES OF BEES AND Their functions A drone is a male bee. Unlike the female worker bee, a drone has no stinger. He does not gather nectar or pollen and cannot feed without assistance from worker bees. His only role is to mate with a maiden queen in a nuptial fight. Drone Bee A Worker bee is any female bee that lacks the reproductive capacity of the colony’s queen bee and carries out the majority of tasks needed for the functioning of the hive. Worker Bee The queen bee is the colony's leader, laying eggs for survival.

VARIETIES OF BEES The local varieties of Bees used for commercial honey production are Apis cerana indica, commonly known as the Indian bee. Relatively non-aggressive and rarely exhibiting swarming behavior , it is ideal for beekeeping. Apis dorsata, also known as the giant honey bee or rock bee, is a large, social honey bee that is native to South and Southeast Asia. Apis Florae is called the dwarf honey bee due to its small size compared to other honeybees. A worker is typically 7–10 mm in body length and its overall coloration is red-brown. A colony builds a single, exposed comb usually on tree branches or shrubs. Apis mellifera The European Bee or Italian Bee These Italian bees have high honey collection capacity.

CHALLENGES AND FACTORS AFFECTING APICULTURE Climate and Weather Conditions: Bees thrive in moderate temperatures (18°C–30°C).
Extreme heat, cold, or heavy rains can disrupt bee activity and honey production.
Seasonal variations affect the availability of nectar and pollen. Availability of Bee Species: Different bee species have varying productivity and adaptability to climates.
For example, Apis mellifera is preferred for large-scale commercial beekeeping Diseases and Pests: Common diseases: American foulbrood, European foulbrood, Nosema .
Pests: Wax moths, Varroa mites, and ants can damage hives. Availability of Water: Bees require clean water for cooling hives and feeding larvae.
Lack of water sources can stress colonies. Predators : Birds, wasps, and spiders prey on bees.
Protective measures like hive covers and traps are necessary.
