APOLLO 11 APOLLO 11 E. SAI CHARAN 19R21A2158

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." - Astronaut Neil Armstrong “We choose to go on to the moon.” - President John F.Kennedy “Impossible' dream. No dream is too high!” - Astronaut Buzz Aldrin “I am alone now, truly alone, and absolutely isolated from any known life.” - Astronaut Michael Collins

Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that first landed humans on the moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin formed the american crew that landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours and 39 minutes late on July 21. Aldrin joined him 19 minute later.

They collected over 47.5 pounds of lunar material to bring back to Earth.

Apollo 11 was launched by a Saturn V rocket from Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, Florida, on July 16 and it was the fifth crewed mission of NASA's Apollo program.

The Apollo spacecraft had three parts: a command module (CM) with a cabin for the three astronauts, the only part that returned to Earth: a service module (SM), which supported the command module with propulsion and other essentials; and a lunar module (LM) that had two stages -- a descent stage for landing on the Moon and an ascent stage to place the astronauts back into lunar orbit.

The Columbia entered Earth's atmosphere at 12:35 p.m., at times heating up so much that communications were interrupted by the supercharged atmosphere surrounding the spacecraft. But all went to plan. It Safely splashed down about 950 miles southwest of Honolulu and only 15 miles from recovery ship USS Hornet. The Apollo 11 quarantine began. It was an unusual process for an unprecedented task: keeping potential moon germs from entering the Earth's atmosphere (and affecting its population).

The Apollo programs was designed to land humans on the Moon and bring them safely back to Earth. six of the missions Apollos 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17) achieved this goal. Apollos 7 and 9 were Earth orbiting missions to test the Command and Lunar Modules, and did not return lunar data. However, Apollo 8 did not land on the moon. It orbited the moon, then came back to Earth. The crew was Frank Borman, Bill Andreas and Jim Lovell. On 27, 1967. Three Astronauts were killed in Apollo 1, from, Edward White, Fus Grissom, and Roger Chaffee. On 7, 1972, NASA launched its last Apollo mission to the moon: Apollo 17. See photos from that historic mission, which landed astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt on the moon while Ron Evans orbited above.
