Diode A diode is a two terminal electronic component which conducts current primarily in one direction. It has zero resistance in one direction and high resistance in another direction

Formation of Diode A diode is formed with a two type semiconductor materials which one is p-type and another is n-type. In p-type material the majority is holes and in n-type electrons are major. The current will only flow when the p type is connected with positive terminal and n type is connected to negative terminal.
Diode Different Types of Diode
Reverse Current Protection Daily Life Solar Panels Voltage Spike Suppression Rectifier Clipping Clamping Voltage Multiplier Applications of Diode
Diode Rectifier The most common and important application of a diode is the rectification of AC power to DC power. Using the diodes, we can construct different types of rectifier circuits: Half Wave Full Wave
Clipping Clipping means to cut off. Diode is used to clipping. In FM transmitters where noise peaks are limited to a particular value so that excessive peaks are removed from them. The clipper circuit is used to put off the voltage beyond the preset value without disturbing the part of the input waveform.
Clamping Clamping is called as level shifter or DC restorer. This circuit is used to shift or alter either positive or negative peak of an input signal to desired level. In positive clamping circuits negative peaks are raised upwards and in negative clamping circuits positive peaks are clamped so that it pushes downwards.
Logic Gates The diode can perform logic operations such as AND OR etc. gates. Low and high impedance states of logic switch are analogous to the forward and reverse-biased conditions of the diode respectively.
Reverse Current Protection There could an accidental connection to connecting the battery in a wrong way or reversing the polarities of the DC supply. For avoiding this a protective or blocking diode is connected in series with the positive side of the input to avoid the reverse connection problem.
Voltage Multiplier Circuits Voltage multiplier consist of two or more diode rectifier circuits which are cascaded to produce a DC output voltage equal to multiplier of the applied input voltage. These multiplier circuits are of different types like double, triple, quadruple etc. by the usage of diodes combination with capacitor, we get the odd or even multiple of the input peak voltage at the output. Voltage Multiplier Circuits Voltage Spike Suppression Solar Panels In Daily Life x x x x Voltage Spike Suppression In circuits sudden removal of supply source produces a higher voltage due to its stored magnetic field energy. These unexpected spikes in the voltage can cause the considerable damage to the circuit components. A diode is connected across the inductor or inductive loads to limit the large voltage spikes. Solar Panels The diodes which are used for protection of solar panels are called as bypass diodes. If the solar panel is faulty or damaged or shaded by fallen leaves, snow and other obstructions, the overall output power decreases and arise hot spot damage because the current of the rest of the cells must flow through this faulty or shaded cell causes a overheating. The main function of the bypass diode is to protect the solar cells against this hot spot heating problem In Daily Life Chargers: Your mobile charger is actually a rectifier(converts AC to DC). Every type of rectifier is made up of diodes. AM/FM Radio : Diode is a vital component in AM/FM receiver. They are used in separating the message signal from the modulating signal(commonly known as demodulation). Noise reduction mic found in smartphones: The noise reductions mics are basically clipping circuits and they are made up of diodes. On/Off indicators: LEDs are used in almost every electronic gadget as an on/off indicator. LASER: LASERs find application in laser printers, CD/DVD players to read/write data, optical fiber communication(without which superfast internet these days would be impossible). Applications
