APPLIQUE WORK
The term derives from the
French word appliquer and
the Latin applicare that
means to join or attach.

INTRODUCTION
An appliqué is ornamental needlework
done on pieces of fabric which are
together sewn or stuck on to a larger
piece to form a picture or pattern.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PATCHWORK
AND APPLIQUE WORK.
PATCHWORK
APPLIQUE WORK
patchwork or piecework is the process of
seaming small pieces of fabric in to a larger
whole,
appliqué is the process of sewing smaller pieces
of fabric onto a larger background fabric. It is a
technique of forming a single pattern
with different pieces of cloth.

Technique of Applique Work-
DIFFERENT PATTERNS ARE CREATED ON PIECES OF
FABRIC.
THEN THESE  PATCHES ARE ATTACHED ON TO A
LARGER BASE FABRIC MOSTLY OF CONTRASTING
COLOR OR TEXTURE.
THE ATTACHING IS DONE BY STITCHING BY HAND
OR BY MACHINE.
THE APPLIQUE OR ATTACHING IS DONE BY
STRAIGHT STITCH, SATIN STITCH OR REVERSE
APPLIQUE.

SCISSOR
It is used for
cutting the
fabric to the
required
pattern
sizes.

NEEDLE
generally used
for hand sewing
with medium
length of size
varying about
70-80 mm.

THREAD
Threads are
used to sew
the fabrics,

PINS
used to
fasten
materials
together
with a long
form and
sharp tip.

SMOOTH EDGE
APPLIQUE
stitched over the raw edges of the
appliqued shapes to give them a
tidy finish that looks smooth and
neat.
RAW EDGE
APPLIQUE
stitched without finishing edges.
Create some sophisticated
designs without the extra work.
MULTI NEEDLE HOOP
APPLIQUE
Placement stitches are created on
the design, and the background
fabric is repositioned so that each
section is accurately stitched.
REVERSE APPLIQUE
Instead of sewing fabric shapes on
top of a fabric background, you
layer fabrics together and stitch a
motif on top. Then you cut away
parts of the fabric to reveal the
shape below.

TRADITIONAL

popular craft of Orissa is
the Pipli applique
technique work that
comes from the town of

In the old days, Pipli

canopies, banners,
umbrellas and trasa for
the religious ceremonies
of Lord Jagannath and
applique's popularity
spread far and wide
through the pilgrims of
Puri,The kings of Puri
engaged craftsmen in the
service of Lord Jagannath
and set up village Pipli for
them to live in.
HISTORY
