APPROACHES TO CURRICULUM DESIGN Prepared by: Stephany Mae Bellen and Christian L. Bandol

Types of Curriculum Design Model

SUBJECT-CENTERED DESIGN Focuses on the content of the curriculum. Corresponds mostly to the textbooks because textbook are usually written based on the specific subject of the course. Most of the schools sing this kind of structure and curriculum design aimed for excellence in the specific subject discipline content.

Variations of Subject-centered Design Subject Design – the oldest and so far the most familiar design for teachers, parents and other laymen. It is the traditional approach to teaching and learning. It is easy to deliver. But it stresses so much the content and forgets about students’ natural tendencies, interests and experiences.

Discipline Design Focuses on academic disciplines. Discipline – refers to specific knowledge learned through a method which the scholars use to study a specific content on their fields. Often used in colleges.

Correlation Design Links separate subject designs in order to reduce fragmentation. Subjects are related to each other and still maintain their identity.

Broad Field Design/Interdisciplinary Made to cure compartmentalization of the separate subjects and integrate the content related to one another. Also known as holistic curriculum Draw around themes and integration. Where a specific theme is identified, and all other subjects areas revolves around the theme.
