Arabic grammar مُضَاف and مُضَاف إِلَيْه genitive case . Possessive construction
مُضَاف and مُضَاف إِلَيْه is possessive phrase. It is the combination of two nouns, in which the first noun is owned by the second. The first noun is called ٱلْمُضَاف ( possessed) The second noun is called ٱلْمُضَاف إِلَيْه (owner) The word مُضَاف come from the Arabic verb أَضَافَ ( add up to). Example: كِتَابُ ٱلْمُعَلَّمِ The teacher’s book or the book of the teacher.
ٱلْمُضَاف is always indefinite noun and will never have the article ٱلْ . ٱلْمُضَاف will never have ( double kasrah or fathah or dammah ) in its lat letter. ٱلْمُضَاف إِلَيْه is a proper noun or otherwise is particularized by ٱلْ . ٱلْمُضَاف إِلَيْه will carry kasrah on its last letter. Examples: بَيْتُ ٱلْجِيرا نِ The neighbor's home طَعَامُ ٱلضُّيُو فِ The food of guests.
Practice: identify مُضَاف and مُضَاف إِلَيْه spot the mistakes and correct them. Example 1 : وَجْ هٍ ٱلْوَلَ دٍ The boy’s face مُضَاف : وَجْهٍ . The mistake is the tanween in the last letter. مُضَاف should never carries tanween ( this example is double kasrah ). مُضَاف إِلَيْه : ٱلْوَلَدٍ . T he msitake is tanween in the last letter. مُضَاف إِلَيْه carries a kasrah on its last letter . Also, a noun with the article ٱلْ should never carries tanween ( This example is double kasrah ). The right answer is : وَجْ هُ ٱلْوَلَ د ِ
