Project MARIA Progress Report Jose C. Martinez, Jr. Elementary School Phase 7 Martinez Subd., Dahican, Mati City
Program Overview According to the Nationwide Statistics, in the 2018 Program for International Students Assessment (PISA), the Philippines scored lowest in Reading out of 79 participating countries. PISA further showed that only 1 out of 5 Filipino learners aged 15 achieved at least minimum proficiency level in Overall Reading Literacy. Moreover, in the 2019 Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metric, only 10% of the country’s Grade 5 learners achieved the minimum proficiency in reading at the end of primary education. World Bank also estimated that as of June 2022, Learning Poverty in the Philippines is 90.9%. Moreover, the learning losses caused by the pandemic era have significantly changed the landscape of schoolchildren’s literacy level specifically in reading (World Bank, 2021). To withstand the changes, various activities were continuously implemented by government and non-government organizations to help the learners cope with these challenges. In lieu, the Jose C. Martinez, Jr. Elementary School has recorded a rise in the number of learners who fall under the category as struggling readers through the Phil-IRI result last School Year 2023-2024.
Program Overview Project MARIA is a three-month reading intervention program that will help the school remediate 55 identified non-readers and struggling readers of Jose C. Martinez, Jr. Elementary School through a partnership with the ARAL (Advancement in Reading and Learning) Program of Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation Inc., a non-government organization, together with the Barangay Dahican Sangguniang Kabataan, and other stakeholders and partner volunteers. This activity was conducted every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) for three hours per session, a total of 28 sessions, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am from August 10,2024-December 4, 2024.
