The concept of designing a school like small
village around a central Rambla (high street).
DESIGN ASPECTS
The views expand as the child
grows, and the rotation of
classrooms on the topography
gives them varying light
qualities
Design focusing on the journey
into the classrooms,leaves
minimal circulation space inside
building
There are no interior corridors, and access to the
classroom follows a gradual exterior spatial sequence:
rambla – courtyard – porch - receiving hall – classroom.
Waldorf-Steiner schools like El Tiller focus on
encouraging children's creativity and imagination,
and limit the amount of testing and exams.

CONSTRUCTION
This kindergarten structure has been clad entirely
in prefabricated panels, consisting of two layers of
pine on both the interior and exterior with
insulation between.
These panels have been arranged so the
pine slats are either horizontal or vertical,
creating a an interesting pattern on the
facade
Externally, this wood has been
temperature-treated, and over time
will turn silvery grey in colour.
Internally, the kindergarten's
concrete structure has been left
exposed, and deep, wooden
window reveals provide space for
both seating and storage.
Façade section
The thermal insulation of
wood-fiber panels and the
inertia of the massive
concrete structure almost
completely eliminates the
need for heating in winter.
The “seasonal table”, the
most unique spatial element
of the Waldorf pedagogy,
This small “altar”, within an
alcove provides a specific
natural light -lateral,
reflected and diffuse.
The spaces between the buttresses
become alcoves, which are shaped
according to the functional and
pedagogical needs of each space.

DESIGN DETAILS
The size of the building's
prestressed concrete frame
meant that no columns were
required
Built against a slope, small
bridges connect the upper level
with a playground space.
To the west, the
building faces directly
on to the campus'
central street.

There was a deliberate
attempt to keep the footprint
low so that the scale of the
space was not overwhelming

school.

Analysis
The kindergarten is constructed keeping in mind the growing minds of children.
The location is good having farmlands around. The entrance helps the children to
feel more at easy, since they are leaving their home without their parents. The
staircase increases the volume and also helps the child to understand
visualisation. The classrooms walls are all blackboards, its like an opening rather
than an end. They express their thoughts and become more active in the
classroom. It is a great way to teach children through architecture.
