AREAS OF NURSING RESEARCH AND PROBLEMS IN NURSING, HEALTH AND SOCIAL RESEARCH Presented by, Miss Kadenla Sherpa 1 st year M.Sc. Nursing Regd. No. 202363002 SMCON

OBJECTIVES At the end of the presentation, learners will be able: To define research To define nursing research To define health research

4. To define social research 5. To explain the areas of nursing research 6. To explain the problems in nursing, health and social research.

DEFINITIONS Research is a systematic, controlled, empirical and critical investigation of natural phenomena guided by theories and hypothesis about the presumed relations among such phenomena. (Kerlinger, 1973)

Nursing research is defined as a formal, systematic, rigorous and intensive process used for solution to nursing problems or to discover and interpret new facts and trends in the clinical practice, nursing education and nursing administration. (Waltz and Bausell, 2001)

Health research is the systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of data with the intent to develop generalizable knowledge to understand health challenges and mount an improved response to them. (WHO)

Social Research is a scientific undertaking which by means of logical methods, aim to discover new facts or old facts and to analyze their sequences, interrelationships, causal explanations and natural laws which govern them. (P.V. Young)

AREAS OF NURSING RESEARCH

RESEARCH IN CLINICAL NURSING PRACTICES

Differs from biomedical research Complex problems in human health require interprofessional approaches.

EXAMPLES Effect of music therapy on quality of recovery and postoperative pain after gynaecological laparoscopy among patients admitted in CRH, Gangtok.

A descriptive study on the prevalence of pin site infection among patients with external skeletal fixation admitted in orthopedic wards of CRH, Gangtok.

RESEARCH IN NURSING EDUCATION

D evelopment of efficient assessment and teaching-learning methods. D evelopment of newer nursing education models.

EXAMPLES Effectiveness of Digital Simulation on knowledge and practice of student nurses of SMCON, Gangtok. Motivational factors influencing nurses to undertake postgraduate hospital-based education.

RESEARCH IN NURSING ADMINISTRATION Administration is one of the domains that need continuous investigation.

EXAMPLES Factors influencing staff mobilization from private to government healthcare sector in India. Factors influencing shortage of male nurses in healthcare settings in Sikkim.

PROBLEMS IN NURSING, HEALTH AND SOCIAL RESEARCH

RESEARCH ARTICLE Clinical research nursing and factors influencing success: a qualitative study describing the interplay between individual and organizational leadership influences and their impact on the delivery of clinical research in healthcare. By Linda Tinkler and Lisa Robinson Journal: Journal of Research in Nursing Published on March 18, 2020

AIM METHODOLOGY FINDINGS To better understand how the perceptions and experiences of Clinical Research Nurses relate to potential for success in research delivery. Seven focus groups and two one-to-one interviews (27 participants) were conducted in a large tertiary Northeast England National Health Service Foundation Trust between March and June 2017. Clinical Research Nurses’ described perceptions and experiences of working to co-ordinate and deliver a range of research as individuals, within their teams, throughout the wider organization, and beyond. Two key elements situated within an overarching theme of leadership emerged as likely to impact on how successfully they were able to practice: the individual (self-leadership) and the organization (leadership culture)

ANY QUESTIONS ?

LET’S EVALUATE Enlist the areas of nursing research. Give an example of nursing research in nursing administration. List some of the problems in nursing, health and social research.
