INTRODUCTION "Around the World in Eighty Days" is set shortly after the Industrial Revolution, a period marked by significant advancements in transportation that have a direct impact on the narrative. Among these advancements are the opening of the Suez Canal, the establishment of the Indian Railway system, and the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad in the United States. These achievements, along with innovations such as steam power and machine tools, enabled individuals to travel for leisure in unprecedented ways. Jules Verne, who possessed a deep fascination with geography and sailing, drew inspiration from the adventurous possibilities these innovations presented. Additionally, during this era of economic and technological growth, British and American imperialism emerged as influential forces on the global stage—an issue that Verne examines with a nuanced perspective throughout the travels and interactions of Fogg and Passepartout with various native populations. 4 AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS 2025

Phileas Fogg Was A Man For Whom Time Was An Absolute Ruler, One He Never Dared To Defy. He Lived His Life In A World Meticulously Governed By The Ticking Of Clocks, Each Second A Cog In The Grand Machinery Of His Daily Existence. Routine Enveloped Him Like A Comforting Cloak, And His Private Life, Devoid Of Spontaneity, Became Just Another Formula To Solve. The Notion Of Embarking On An Adventure—something Unpredictable—was As Alien To Him As The Idea Of Breaking From His Cherished Schedule. It Was On One Fateful Evening At The Reform Club, During A Casual Game Of Whist, That His Life Took An Unexpected Turn. The Audacious Wager To Circumnavigate The Globe In Eighty Days Ignited A Tempest Within Him, An All-consuming Challenge That Momentarily Thrilled Him. However, Deep Down, It Was The Apprehension Of Stepping Outside His Regulated Life That Plagued His Thoughts. Yet, With A Heart Steeled Against The Notion Of Defeat And Armed With A Meticulous Plan, Fogg Set Forth On His Journey. His Travels Began With The Crisp Morning Air Of London, The City's Clock Towers Ringing A Steadfast Farewell. But As He Journeyed, The First Tremors Of Change Emerged. Battling Storms At Sea And The Unpredictable Nature Of Railways In India, His Ambitions Were Thwarted At Every Turn. Fogg's Rigid Perspective Was Put To The Test When A Delay Caused By A Washed-out Bridge Led Him To Consider Options He Would Have Dismissed Outright: Improvisation And Reliance On The Kindness Of Strangers. It Was During These Moments That He Began To Perceive Time Not As An Enemy But As A Fickle Companion, One That Could Surprise Him When Least Expected. Even More Transformative Was His Relationship With Aouda. Initially, She Was Merely A Shared Challenge, An Unexpected Blessing In The Chaos Of His Journey. Yet, As They Braved The Trials Of Their Adventure Together, Her Warmth Began To Thaw The Ice Around Fogg's Heart. Aouda Was Spontaneity Personified, Embracing Life With A Vibrancy That Shone Brighter Than The Rigid Clock Face He Had Grown Accustomed To. With Every Shared Laughter And Every Unplanned Detour, 8 2025 AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS PRESENTATION BY VEDANT
He Learned To Savior Life’s Unpredictable Nature, An Intoxicating Counterbalance To His Otherwise Regimented Existence. In a world rapidly modernising under the Victorian ethos, where speed was revered and efficiency championed, Fogg's adventure became a critique of the very principles he had held dear. The fascination with progress often overshadowed the more meaningful connections with people and places. Each leap across time zones left him confronting a curious truth: he had gained time, a day lost in calculations, and yet, it was in those moments of spontaneity and emotional connection that he recognised the true essence of life—living it rather than merely counting it. When Fogg and Aouda wed, their union not only celebrated love but also reflected an evolution in Fogg’s understanding of time and companionship. Their bond was a tapestry woven from shared adventures and unexpected trials, creating a partnership buoyed by responsive adaptation rather than rigid expectation. Fogg found joy not just in the achievement of his wager, but in the everyday spontaneity they cultivated together. The obstacles they faced after their marriage, particularly the disapproval of society and its rigid expectations, further strengthened their resolve. Fogg's transformation from a solitary clock-watcher to a devoted husband was profound, embodying a newfound appreciation for both time and emotional connection. His journey had reshaped his very essence, revealing that the value of life lay not solely in punctuality but in embracing the detours, the unscripted moments that filled his days with vibrancy and warmth. As Fogg gazed upon the horizon with Aouda by his side, the world unfurled before him not as a series of destinations to be reached on schedule but as a landscape rich with adventure. Together, they would navigate this ever-changing world beyond the confines of time's rigid frame, drawn onward by laughter, love, and the promise of uncharted journeys ahead. In the end, Phileas Fogg discovered that while the clock may tick relentlessly, it could not measure the true richness of the experiences that life had to offer. 9 2025 AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS PRESENTATION BY VEDANT

LITERARY DEVICES PRESENTATION BY VEDANT
Allusion : An allusion is an unexplained reference to someone or something outside of the text. An allusion to the "pert dunces" of Molière helps paint a picture of the type of person Passepartout is: Passepartout was by no means one of those pert dunces depicted by Molière, with a bold gaze and a nose held high in the air; he was an honest fellow, with a pleasant face, lips a trifle protruding, soft-mannered and serviceable, with a good round head, such as one likes to see on the shoulders of a friend. Dramatic Irony : A plot device often used in theatre, literature, film, and television to highlight the difference between a character's understanding of a given situation and that of the audience. Multiple layers of dramatic irony occur in Chapter 8, when Fix tells the consul that he thinks he has identified the bank robber from London. The consul asks him why the robber would go out of his way to get his visa checked. Foil : A character that contrasts with another character, usually the protagonist, to highlight the latter's character that contrasts with another character, usually the protagonist, to highlight the latter's traits. Passepartout is a foil for Fogg, allowing the reader to see that Fogg's intense love of order can be too extreme. In Chapter 10, Fogg's adherence to routine renders him unable to appreciate the wonder of his surroundings 12 2025 PRESENTATION BY VEDANT AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS
Foreshadowing : Foreshadowing is a literary device in which authors hint at plot developments that don't occur until later in the story. In Chapter 24, on his way across the Pacific Ocean, Passepartout congratulates himself on keeping his watch on London time because it now matches perfectly with the timepieces on the ship. The narration uses dramatic irony to foreshadow the end of the novel. Imagery : Imagery, in any sort of writing, refers to descriptive language that engages the human senses. In Chapter 14, when the characters speed out of India on the train, the narration uses imagery to convey the sense that the characters can see India being anglicised out their train window. Irony : Irony is a literary device or event in which how things seem to be is very different from how they are. In Chapter 1, the narration describes Fogg's reason for firing the servant whom Passepartout replaces. This moment is one of the first instances where the novel satirises the industrialised world's expectation that human workers can and should behave like machines. Metaphors : A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two different things by saying that one thing is the other. Passepartout first agrees to work as Fogg's servant under the impression that the job will allow him to settle down in London and embrace a predictable routine. In Chapter 2, Passepartout uses a metaphor to describe Fogg's predictability as an employer 13 2025 PRESENTATION BY VEDANT AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS
Motifs : A motif is an element or idea that recurs throughout a work of literature. As its title suggests, the novel is about a trip around the world, and one of its motifs is cross-cultural encounters. It always explores these encounters from a European point of view. For example, in Chapter 12, Aouda makes her first appearance in a scene wrought with harmful stereotypes about Indian culture. Satire : Satire is the use of humour, irony, sarcasm, or ridicule to criticise something or someone. In Chapter 1, the narration describes Fogg's reason for firing the servant whom Passepartout replaces. This moment is one of the first instances where the novel satirises the industrialised world's expectation that human workers can and should behave like machines. Similes : A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two unlike things. As the Mongol sails to Bombay in Chapter 9, Passepartout is excited to see Mocha, a port city in Yemen. The narration uses a simile to describe his impression of it. Situational Irony : Situational irony in poetry occurs when an event contradicts what is expected or intended, often creating a sense of dramatic contrast or absurdity. There is a moment of situational irony in Chapter 11, when Fogg and his companions must charter an elephant to cross part of India. 14 2025 PRESENTATION BY VEDANT AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS
