PROBLEM STATEMENT Low survival rate and poor growth performance as a major obstacle in meeting the demand of fry, particularly in developing countries. This experiment has been designed to study the effect of stocking density, water quality and feeding frequency on the survival and growth of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings.
To study the effect of water quality and stocking density on the survival of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings. To study the effect of commercial feed on the growth of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings given at different frequencies. OBJECTIVES
SIGNIFICANCE Clarias gariepinus a first ‘choice’ farming fish and highly relished by consumers include biological (high food conversion ratio, fast growth rate, readily accepting artificial feeds, ease of artificial propagation, disease resistance), social (good market price, good table food quality) and ecological reasons (tolerance to wide range of environmental conditions. High mortality during fish seed production is common and is a major challenge confronting fish farmer. This experiment is designed to investigate the effect of stocking density, water quality and feeding frequency on the growth and survival of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN It will consist of three treatments with two replicates. Stocking density of 33, 50 and 67 fingerlings/meter square will be maintained for treatment one, two and three consequently and for replicates. Treatment one will be treated as control group. Aeration with air pump will be given to treatment two and three except control. Feeding frequency for treatment one, two and three will be one time/day, two times/day and three times/day and consequently for replicates.
vi. Survival rates and specific growth rates will be recorded on a fortnightly basis. vii. Water quality parameters such as temperature, Dissolved oxygen and pH will be measured and recorded on routine basis. viii. To evaluate the effect of stocking density on production performance with more precision, the performance index (PI) was calculated. This index was calculated by combining two responses such as growth and survival.
6 Total 9 research tanks will be used in the experiment. Air pumps/blowers will be used for a eration purposes. Lab instruments such DO meter, pH meter, turbidity meter will be required for noting the water quality parameters. C ommercial 30% protein feed will be used for feeding the fingerlings. PONDS/OTHER FACILITIES REQUIRED
DURATION The duration of the experiment will be 45 days
STOCKING RATE Stocking density of 33, 50 and 67 fingerlings/square meter will be maintained for treatment one, two and three and consequently for replicates.
WATER MANAGEMENT Water depth of 1.0 meter will be maintained in tanks.
OTHER INPUTS 500 fingerlings of Clarias gariepinus (catfish). Air Stones with aeration pipes Hand Net Tubs 02 No. Glassware (Beaker, petri dish etc ) Weight Balance
SAMPLING PLAN Sampling for mean body weight and survival rate will be done on fortnightly basis. Water quality parameters will be maintained and measured on routine bases. Temperature (Co) Dissolved oxygen (ppm) pH Conductivity ( ms ) Carbon Dioxide (ppm) Salinity (ppt) Total hardness Alkalinity (ppm)
HYPOTHESES H 0.1 : Growth and survival of the fingerlings of Clarias gariepinus will not be improved by stocking the fingerlings at relatively low density and improving the water quality with aeration. H 0.2 : Growth and survival of the fingerlings of Clarias gariepinus will not be improved by feeding the fingerlings with commercial 30 percent protein diet with varied frequencies.
STATISTICAL METHODS Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and least significant difference (LSD) were determined to find out the effect of stocking densities on the growth and survival rate of C. gariepinus fingerlings.
