Courting & Marriage
Filipino
Presented by: 1-A Group 4

Courting?
Courting is the process of getting to know someone to
decide whether or not to pursue a more serious relationship
with them. Courting may also involve convincing the other
person why a serious relationship would be a good idea.
What is

Marriage?
Marriage is a social, political, economic and spiritual bond
between two people founded on the principles of love, trust,
and companionship. It is something that will hopefully link
you with someone for life and a way in which you can take
full pleasure of parenthood and growing old together.
What is

“Ligaw” or “panliligaw” is the Filipino
word for courtship. It is an important stage
that every man must go through in order to
get the “oo” answer from a Filipina. The
ligaw tradition dates back to pre-colonial
times and continues to be practiced by
many.

Harana is a traditional courtship practice
where men introduce themselves and woo their
admired lady by serenading underneath her
window at night. The “manliligaw”or suitor will
bring a guitar and, sometimes, a group of
friends to accompany him in his serenade.

Types of
Harana or Serenade

In the Visayas region, most especially in
Cebu, balak or spoken poetry was the most
popular courtship mode in the past. This
involved a highly emotive and expressive
recitation of love verses by the suitor to his
adored lady. It must be done with with a
strong level of seriousness and sincerity
Balak or Spoken Poetry

Paninilbihan or Servitude
Paninilbihan or act of servitude at
the lady’s home was executed by
gentlemen in order to depict their
genuineness and loyalty toward the
woman they love and adore. Suitors
perform manual labor such as
household chores while being
observed by both their lover and
their lover’s families.

During the post-hispanic
times in the country, sending
love letters was technically
one of most popular type of
dating and courtship norms. It
was inspired by Dr. Jose Rizal
who was so fond of writing
letters, poems, and novels.
Sending Love Letters

Pamamanhikan has been part
of the Filipino culture since
the pre-colonial era. It is a
Filipino tradition where the
groom’s family visits the
bride’s family to formally ask
for her hand in marriage.

Filipino Marriage
A traditional Filipino wedding
include the lighting of the
candle, the draping of the
unity cord and veil, plus the
exchanging of wedding coins.
All rooted in Catholic belief.
The candle ceremony involves
the ninong and ninang lighting
