What are Articles?
A, An and The are called Articles. They are used to point out
people or things.
example- A Book is lying on a table.
Gita has an umbrella.
The boy standing next to me is my cousin.
Articles are categorised as - Definite and Indefinite.
Definite Articles - The is called Definite Article. The is used
when we point out some particular person or thing.
example- Can Give me the pen in your pocket?
The van parked in front of our house belongs to
my cousin.
Indefinite Articles - A and An are called Indefinite
articles. A and An are used when we are not talking about any
particular person or thing in particular.
example- A car is parked in front of our house.
Max lost an eye in the war.
Uses of the Articles - A and An
1. Article A is used before common nouns which are in
singular number.
2. Article A is used before common noun which begin with a
consonant sound.
example- A book is lying on a table.
3. A rticle A is used before any word that begins with a vowel
with is pronounced with a consonant sound
example- a university, a one rupee note
4. Article A is used before the words- few, little, hundred,
thousand, dozen, quarter, lot.
example- I bought a dozen banana.
Moli wants a little sugar in her milk.
5. Article A is used when numerical value of one is sensed.
example- Twelve inches make a foot.
Uses of Article An:
6. Article An is used before common noun which are singular
in nature and begin with a vowel sound.
example- An eagle and an owl were good friends.
7. Article An is used before abbreviations if the consonant
begin with a vowel sound.
example- an MLA, an MA
8. Article An is used for words beginning with H in which H
is silent or not pronounced.
example- an hour, an honest woman
9. The Indefinite Articles- [A and An] are also used when we
speak about a profession.
example- Meera is an author.
Uma is a painter.
10. Indefinite Article-[ A, An] is used before singular
countable noun that is used to represent a class of things.
example - An elephant is a huge animal.
A woman is more intuitive than a man.
Uses of Definite Article- The
1. Article A or An is used when we speak of a person or thing
for the first time But When we speak of it again, we use the.
example- I found a pen in my drawer. The pen was not
working.
2. Article The is used before the names of rivers, seas, oceans,
desert, canals, group of islands, mountains ranges, etc.
example- The Times of
India, The Himalaya, The Ganga, The Atlant
ic ocean, The Thar Desert
3. Article The is used before the names of holy books and
newspaper.
example- The Times of India, The Ramayana
My father reads the Telegraph newspaper everyday.
4. Article The is used before musical instruments.
example - Shalini loves to play the piano.
5. Article The is used before the names of things that are only
one of their kind:
example- the earth, the sun
6. Article The is used before Superlatives.
example- Ben is the youngest boy in the family.
Tim is the most intelligent student in the class.
7. Article The is used before ordinals.
example- Tia was the first girl to arrive on time.
8. Article The is used with directions.
example- the south, the north-east
9. Article The is used before the names of famous buildings.
example - The Taj Mahal
10. Article The is used before the names of families or
nationalities.
example - the Guptas, the English
11. Article The is used in phrases such as the first, the
following, the last, the only, the next, the previous. But
The is not used before expressions like- last year, last night,
last week, next week, next month etc
example- Lily, Hari and Ali were sitting in the last row.
Nitu will return home next week.
12. Article The is used before classes of people.
example- the rich, the poor
13. Article The is used before an adjective when the noun is
understood.
example- We should respect the elders.
Omission of the Articles
1. Articles are not used before the names of languages.
example- Lily speaks Bengali at home.
2. Articles are not used before the material nouns.
example- Jewellery was made of gold and silver.
The walls of the house are made of cement and
bricks.
3. Articles are not used before the names of meals.
example- I missed my lunch today.
4. Articles are not used before names of sports.
example- Hockey is a popular sport.
5. Articles are not used before the names of academic
subjects.
example- Max hates history but likes geography.
6. Articles are not used before plural countable nouns that
represent entire class.
example- Children loves outdoor games.
Lions stay in den.
7. Articles are not used before abstract nouns used in general
way.
example- Honesty is the best policy.
8. Articles are not used before the names of relations- father,
mother, etc
example- Uncle is coming for dinner.
His father is a bank manager.
9. Articles are not used before some phrases- in heaven, at
fault, at sunset, by name, at sight, at noon, by night, at dinner,
above ground, on earth, by river, on foot, at rest, at dawn, at
school, by train, in jest, at ease, in debt, at home. etc
10. Articles are not used before the names of people.
example- Rahul failed in exam.
11. Articles are not used before the names of continents,
countries, cities.
example- Pakistan is the neighbour of India.
Kolkata is the city of joy.
12. Articles are not used before the names of individual
mountains, individual lakes, hills, island etc.
example- Mount Everest is the highest peak in the Himalaya.
Note
Articles- A and An can used only with singular countable
nouns , but Article - The can be used both with countable and
uncountable nouns.
We always use a and an before countable nouns in the
singular number. We do not use articles before uncountable
nouns.
example- Give me a glass of water. - Correct Statement
Give me a water. - Incorrect statement.
