Assessment of attitude An attitude is a dispositional readiness to respond to certain situations, persons or objects in a consistent manner, which has become one’s typical mode of response..

TYPES OF ATTITUDE SCALE There are two attitude scales commonly used to assess the attitude of individuals: Likert scale Semantic differential scale

Likert scale Likert scale is a composite measure of attitudes that involve summation of scores on set of items (statements) to which respondents are asked to indicate their degree of agreement or disagreement.

Scoring of likert scale

Characteristics Of likert scale Psychological measurement tool Illustrative in nature Neutral statements Bipolar scaling method Measurement of specific number scaling categories

Advantages of likert scale Easy to construct. More reliable and valid tool to measure psychological variables Easy to administer. Less time consuming during construction and administration

Disadvantages of likert scale Respondents may feel forced to answer the preplanned items. Feelings of respondents may not be fully assessed. Casual approach of respondents may provide misleading data

Semantic differential scale Semantic differential scale is a type of rating scale designed to measure the connotative meaning of objects, events and concepts. The connotations are used to derive the attitude of the objects, events and concepts.

Advantages of semantic differential scale A convenient method to assess beliefs, attitudes and values in quantitative form. Easy to administer. Provides reasonable, valid and reliable quantitative data.

Disadvantages of semantic differential scale Difficult to select the relevant concepts that are appropriate for any given investigation. Time consuming, if anyone is not able to find the appropriate adjective pairs.
