ASSESSMENT OF SKILLS
INTRODUCTION
DEFINITION Assessment is the process of documenting, usually in measurable terms, knowledge , attitudes , skills and beliefs
DEFINITION Assessment is the systematic examination of educational and social progress.
PRINCIPLES It primary purpose is to improve student learning It must be fair and equitable for all students
Communication about assessment should be clear, and meaningful Professional development and collaboration, support assessment Involvement of students and parents Practices are regularly reviewed and refined
METHODS OF EVALUATION
ATTITUDE
TOOLS TO ASSESS SKILLS
OBSERVATION CHECKLIST Observation checklist is the most commonly used instrument for performance evaluation. Observation checklist is simply a list of the performer’s behaviours associated with particular nursing interventions within a space for the assessor to check or tick off whether or not that particular behaviour occurred.
CHARACTERISTIC OF CHECKLIST Observe one respondent at one time Clearly specify the characteristics of the behaviour to be observed Use only carefully prepared checklist to avoid more complex traits The observer should be trained ho to observe, what to observe and how to record the observed behaviour
CONSTRUCTION OF CHECKLIST Express each item in clear and simple language An intensive survey of the literature should be made to determine the type of checklist to be used in a particular assessment/evaluation The list of the items in the checklist may be continuous and divided into groups of related items
These lists of the items are formulated on the basis of the judgement of experts Avoid negative statement whenever possible Avoid lifting statements verbatim from the text Ensure that each item has a clear response Checklist must have the quality of completeness and comprehensiveness
It allow inter-individual comparisons They provide a simple method to record observations They are adaptable to subject matter areas Checklist are useful in evaluating learning activities expected to be performed They are helpful in evaluating procedure work Properly prepared checklist allow the observer to constrain the direct action Decrease the chances of errors in observation
It do not indicate the quality of performance so the usefulness of checklist is limited Only a limited component of overall clinical performance can be evaluated They are not easy to prepare
RATING SCALE
Rating is the term used to express opinion or judgement regarding some performance of a person, object, situation and character. Rating scale is a device by which judgements may be qualified or a opinion concerning a trait can be systematized. A rating scale is a tool in which a person simply checks off another person’s level of performance. It could be of 3-point, 5-point or a 7-point rating scale.
CHARACTERISTIC OF RATING SCALE These scales are most commonly used tools to carry out structured observations They provide more flexibility to judge the level of performance or presence of attributes among subjects.
They are easy to administer and score the measured attribute They have a wide range of application in nursing educational evaluation It can be easily used for a large group They are adaptable and flexible assessment instruments
It is difficult to fix up rating about many aspects of an individual There are chances of subjective evaluation thus the scale may become unscientific and unreliable
ANECDOTAL RECORDS Anecdotal record is an objective description by the teacher of a significant occurrence or an episode in life of the pupil. Characteristics of anecdotal record it should include a factual description of an event it should contain a record of a single incident
ITEMS IN ANECDOTAL RECORD Name of the school, class, student, date of observation Setting background of the incident Signature of the observer Interpretation of the behaviour Recommendations concerning the behaviour
CUMMULATIVE RECORD It is an account of child’s history in the school. It is a record of information concerned appraisal of the individual pupil maintained in a card and kept in one place. Form of cumulative record Card sheet Printed folder Booklet
Contents of cumulative record Personal data Milestones of growth and development Health information Psychological report Vocational plans Personality characteristics General overall marks
PRACTICAL EXAMINATION
It is concerned with the assessment of practical performance skills and practice competencies acquired by the students during the course of a particular programme. Purpose of practical examination To assess the practical skills and practice competencies of nursing students To assess the students problem solving skills To assess the recording and reporting skills of nursing students
It provides an opportunity to assess the skills and competencies acquired by the students An examiner gets an opportunity to assess the communication and interpersonal skills of the students along with their clinical competence in performing the nursing procedures.
Viva voce is also termed as an oral examination which consists of a dialogue between the examiner and a student where the examiner asks questions and the student replies. Purpose of viva voce To assess the student’s ability to communicate with another person To identify and analyse the student’s presence of mind To evaluate the student spontaneity and mannerism To acquire soundness of knowledge through various forms of questions To diagnose the student limitation and weakness and take remedial action
OBSERVED STRUCTURED CLINICAL EXAMINATION It is a modern type of examination often used in health science to assess clinical skill performance and competence in skills such as communication, clinical examination, medical and nursing procedures. Uses of OSCE Interpersonal and communication skills History taking skills Physical examination of specific body systems Mental health assessment Clinical problem solving skills Patient education Health promomtion Basic and advanced nursing care procedure practices
ADVANTAGES OF OSCE Examiner can decide in advance what is to be tested and can design the examination to test these competencies Examiner can have better control on the content and complexities More practical because it can be used with a large number of students
Students knowledge and skills are tested in compartments and they are not tested on their ability to look at the patient as a whole Examiners are required to pay close attention to students repeating the same task on a number of occasions. The time involved in setting up the examination is greater than for the traditional examination
