Associated Organs in Mammalian Digestive System Aqsa Rehman 1653-BS-Z-21
Digestion Digestion is the complex process of turning the food you eat into nutrients, which the body uses for energy, growth, cell repair that is needed for our survival and life. It is a muscular tube extends from mouth to anus passes through the pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine. Digestion is a form of catabolism or breaking down of food. It involves chemical and mechanical digestion.
Associated Organs Organs that secrete substances which are needed for digestion (chemical digestion) are called associated organs. Food not passes through them. Associated organs also called as accessory organs.
Associated Organs in Mammalian Digestive System Salivary glands Liver Pancreas Gall bladder
Salivary glands Salivary glands produce saliva that aid in digestion. There are three types of salivary glands. The saliva lubricates the mouth and softens food. It also wash off harmful agents. Types Location Sublingual glands Below tongue, on the floor of mouth Submandibular glands Below jaw Parotid gland In front of ears
Pancreas (secretion of pancreatic juices) During the process of digestion, our pancreas secretes enzymes that are called pancreatic juices. These juices travel through duct. They empty into upper part of small intestine called as duodenum. They result in breakdown of starch, sugars etc. The pancreas has exocrine funtion. Its exocrine function is production of enzymes that assist in digestion.
Name Function Lipase Works with bile to break down fats Amylase Break down of carbohydrates Protease Break down of proteins
Liver (bile production) The liver is one of largest organs in the body of mammal. Just under the diaphragm It is continuously producing bile. This yellowish brown fluid aids chemical digestion by emulsifying fats in duodenum. Biles flows out of the liver into right and left hepatic ducts, into the common hepatic ducts, and towards the small intestine to help with digestion and absorption of fats
Functions Hence function of liver may include bile secretion detoxification excretion carbohydrates metabolism lipid metabolism protein metabolism
Gallbladder (stores bile) The gallbladder is green pear-shaped sac and thin muscular walls. The gallbladder stores the bile that is produced by the liver. The bile is released into the small intestine. Hence it plays important role towards digrstion.
