Avenue planting

Definition Planted with flowering & foliage trees on the either sides of the roads are called Avenue planting

Functions of avenue planting Provide shade Increase the beauty of surroundings Help to purify air & cool the surrounding atmosphere Control noise from the vehicles Reduce the suspended dust particles Prevents erosion on road surface

Selection of avenue trees Should have well spreading crown and canopy Should be sturdy, long lived and evergreen Branches must be strong enough so that they don’t break easily during storm Should be thornless Trees with forking habit & drooping branches are avoided Trees which litter the ground with fruits or dry leaves are avoided

Planting and aftercare Digging of pits Pit of 1 m 3 size are dug on both sides @ desired distance Distance of planting for low height & high height trees are 5-6 m & 10-12 m respectively Pits are filled with mix. of soil & FYM in the ratio 5:1

Planting Should be done during spring (for deciduous trees) &rainy season (for evergreen trees) Place the seedling in the middle position of pit Plant should be watered immediately after planting Watering should be done once in a week

Protection Should be done by proper tree guard 4. After care Regular weeding should be undertaken till the seedling establishment Pruning help to maintain shape, size and vigor
