ARTICLES AND VIDEOS CREW RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Always stay EMPOWERED and PROACTIVE. Remember – if you see something, say something. AND Better to be safe than sorry.
ARTICLES AND VIDEOS CREW RESOURCE MANAGEMENT One of the biggest factors of Crew Resource Management (CRM) is SITUATIONAL AWARNESS . Especially, as flight attendants, we need to ALWAYS be attentive & our eyes and ears are never resting .
ARTICLES AND VIDEOS CREW RESOURCE MANAGEMENT When we focus on one particular thing. Or when we put on the figurative blinders. We begin to exhibit SELECTIVE ATTENTION . Selective attention can be detrimental to SITUATIONAL AWARENESS .

ARTICLES AND VIDEOS CELLPHONES, PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND DISTRACTIONS The impact of people's fascination with, even addiction to, cell phones and texting is becoming more evident every year.
ARTICLES AND VIDEOS CELLPHONES, PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND DISTRACTIONS People in aviation are just as susceptible to distractions, have more opportunities than most people to lose their focus on the most critical areas at the time and suffer more drastic consequences when it happens.
ARTICLES AND VIDEOS CELLPHONES, PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND DISTRACTIONS With the potentially severe consequences of a loss of situational awareness and the prevalence of distractions throughout a flight, it is critical that all CREW actively work to reduce distractions as much as possible. A NASA report suggests several “lines of defense” that can reduce the chance of an incident or accident due to distractions:
ARTICLES AND VIDEOS CELLPHONES, PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND DISTRACTIONS 1. Recognize that conversation is a powerful distracter. 2. Recognize the impact of “head-down tasks” on flying and monitoring. 3. Suspend noncritical duties when appropriate. 4. Treat interruptions as red flags.
CELLPHONES, PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND DISTRACTIONS ARTICLES AND VIDEOS Are CREW overdoing it with the selfies and other cell phone distractions? Are we are putting the safety of our flight at stake when we stop to snap a photo or text a friend?
CELLPHONES, PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND DISTRACTIONS ARTICLES AND VIDEOS We should really try to limit our cell phone use during flight to aircraft operations and emergencies only to ensure we don't lose focus on the task at hand and find ourselves the recipient of an FAA violation or worse, a fatal accident . Don't be that guy! Don't be the guy taking selfies on final approach. Don't be the guy that dies in a plane crash, leaving photos or video footage of your mistakes in your wake.
CELLPHONES, PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND DISTRACTIONS ARTICLES AND VIDEOS Since April 2014, US airline pilots have been prohibited by the FAA from using electronic devices for personal reasons while on duty in the cockpit. These alerts and rings in the previous few slides may have been annoying and distracting. Just think of how those distractions could be detrimental to safety while on duty.

ARTICLES AND VIDEOS AUDITORY FATIGUE Auditory fatigue is defined as a temporary loss of hearing after exposure to sound . This results in a temporary shift of the auditory threshold known as a temporary threshold shift (TTS). The damage can become permanent ( permanent threshold shift , PTS) if sufficient recovery time is not allowed before continued sound exposure. Short-term fatigue full recovery from TTS can be achieved in approximately two minutes Long-term fatigue recovery requires a minimum of several minutes but can take up to several days Aircraft engines can account for excessive vibrations that lead to auditory fatigue which can lead to a break down in CRM. Other factors that can lead to poor CRM and decision making
Cell phone usage and distractions
Cell phone usage and distractions
Humans have 2 cognitive systems ; one involves conscious control , while the other is largely automatic . Driving a car on a familiar route is largely automatic. Texting requires active conscious processing. To eliminate distractions, some forward-thinking companies clearly define when the use of a PED is prohibited. One Canadian helicopter company requires its maintenance technicians to place their cell phones in a secure box before working on the shop floor. Another prohibits the use of PEDs in company vehicles. Individuals must also take some responsibility in eliminating the distractions from the use of PEDs. One pilot shares, “I turn off my phone when I pick up my flight release from dispatch. At that point, I become just a pilot. I am no longer available to be a dad, husband, homeowner, union rep, sports fan, shareholder or whatever—all of that can wait. If some flight-related issue arises, then I turn my phone back on to communicate with the company.” ARTICLES AND VIDEOS CELLPHONES, PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND DISTRACTIONS
When you are arming or disarming a cabin door, NOTHING else matters . There is no request, no on time departure that takes priority. We are on the aircraft for this purpose specifically and we cannot delegate that responsibility to another crew member or delay acting on the direction to arm or disarm a cabin door. When you are told to arm or disarm a cabin door, stop what you are doing and go to your assigned exit. ARTICLES AND VIDEOS CELLPHONES, PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND DISTRACTIONS
