NEWBORN BATH Bathing the infant is an excellent time to assess the infant and to do parent teaching. Bathing cleanses the skin and provides both sensory and social stimulation. Because of the risk of hypothermia, the infant must be kept covered and to the extent possible and the bath should be completed quickly. Usually, a sponge bath is recommended until after the umbilical cord falls off, usually within 10-14 days but there are infants where umbilical stump falls after a week. During the bath, the umbilical area should be avoided to prevent soiling it with water. Rationale: soiling the cord the cord.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED: WASH BASIN or SMALL TUB WITH WARM WATER (36.6-37.8 Degree Celsius) Mild soap, (liquid soap) Baby shampoo Cotton balls Wash cloths Diaper Extra blanket Bath blanket Baby’s cloth Soft bristled brush or fine-toothed comb Cotton applicator Sterile normal saline solution Gloves

PROCEDURE Rationale Inspect the infant’s skin for dryness, peeling, or signs of infection. Care of the skin during and after the bath may need to be altered to prevent infection or the spread of infections. Peeling is common as the skin dries, and many infants are born with peeling skin or desquamation especially if they are post term babies. 2. Assess the site of the umbilical cord for redness, drainage, drying and intactness. Redness or drainage at the umbilical site may indicate irritation or infection. 3. Assess the infant’s temperature. (36.8 and above only). Do not bath if temperature is below 36.8 or check agencies protocol.   4. Take the baby’s weight. Undress the baby. Daily weight is assessed to assess their nutritional status. 5. Baby’s basinet should be ready with the baby’s clothes and blanket to be used after bathing.

6. Make sure that all equipment/supplies to be used is within reach.   7. Bathing is done starting from head down to the extremities.   8. First, using your cotton ball wet with tap water, clean the eyes from inner canthus to outer canthus. Then discard. Wash one eye at a time. Do the same to the other eye.   9. Wash the face using a cotton ball wet with water. Use the S technique motion   10 . Using a new wet cotton ball, clean the forehead down to the cheek crossing the nose bridge, then the other cheek, then to the chin and extend to the ear then discard.

11. Use another cotton using an inverted S technique from forehead then lower cheek, under the nose then under the chin and extend to EXTERNAL ear.   12. Dry the face and neck with a towel using a gentle patting motion.   13. Loosen the bath blanket on the head part.   14. Do football hold and bath the head. Occluded both ears with your thumb and middle or index finger.   15. Wet the hair, apply sufficient amount of baby shampoo and lather. Massage hair and scalp using fat pads of the finger in circular motion.

16. Use a fine-toothed comb to remove any clotted blood, vernix, or the like especially if initial bath.   17. Milk the hair to remove excess soap.   18. Rinse hair thoroughly pay special attention at the back of the ears and nape. If not rinsed properly might cause skin irritations. 19. Dry the hair using a soft towel, bath blanket can also be used for drying.   20. Unwrap the baby and wet the body, extremities and the back.

21. Apply enough soap starting from the neck, arms, armpit, chest, limbs and back. Avoid soaping the hands.   22. Hold the baby with nondominant hand with one finger anchored the armpit. To have a strong grip, to avoid falling. 23. Rinse thoroughly avoiding the umbilical area. Rinse half of the body at a time. Cord should be kept dry to facilitate healing and to prevent infection. 24. Bath the back part of the baby, the buttocks and the lower limbs. Rinse thoroughly.   25. Lay baby gently on your working table and pat dry. Patting dry rather than rubbing with towels prevents skin irritation.

26. Do oral care using a cotton applicator soaked with sterile normal saline solution.   27. Clean the cord using a dry sterile cotton applicator.   28. Dress the baby, put diaper and swaddle to keep warm.   29. Leave baby comfortably with the mother or in the bassinet. Ensure safety.   30. Do aftercare of the equipment used.   31. Wash hands.   32.Document any important observations.
