BALANCED DIET

INTRODUCTION Balanced diet achieved by eating variety of food. There is no single food with correct amount of all essential nutrients. Eating a balanced diet requires a certain amount of knowledge and planning. Nutrition Expert Group from ICMR has recommended the composition of balanced diet for Indian. They recommended cereals(rice, wheat, jowar) pulses, vegetables, roots & tubers, fruits, milk& milk products, fats &oils, sugar & ground nuts. Additional intake of Meats, fish&egg for non vegetarian for vegetarian milk &pulses .

Definition: Diet: A diet may be defined as the kinds of food on which a person or group lives Balanced Diet: A balanced diet is defined as one which contains a variety of foods in such quantities and proportions that the need for energy, amino-acids, vitamins, minerals, fats, carbohydrates and other nutrients is adequately met for maintaining health, vitality and general well-being and also makes a small provision for extra nutrients to withstand shot duration of leanness

Principles: First and foremost, the daily requirement of protein should be met. Next comes the fat requirement, which should be limited to 15-30 % of the daily energy in take Carbohydrates rich in natural fibre should constitute the remaining food energy

The dietary pattern varies widely in different parts of the world. It is generally develop around the kinds of food Produced (or imported) depending up on the climatic conditions of the region, economic capacity, religion, customs, tastes & habits of the people Balanced diets formulated by Indian Council of Medical Research are given Below:
