BANJARA TRIBE

Introduction: The Banjara (also called Lambani , Vanjara and Gormati ) are a community usually described as nomadic people from the Indian state of Rajasthan , now spread out all over Indian subcontinent . They have spread to Andhra Pradesh , Haryana , Karnataka , Maharashtra , Madhya Pradesh , Rajasthan , Uttar Pradesh and other states of India. The sanskrit bi-word Vana chara transliterated as "Forest wanderers”. Their primitive role in Indian Society -Forest wood collectors and distributers

Clothing : Women are known to wear colourful and beautiful costumes.They use mirror chips and often coins to decorate it.Their customs, language and dress indicate they originated from Rajasthan Kanchalli Phetiya Ohrni (wrapper)

Married woman wear ivory bangles between the elbow and the shoulder . ivory bangles are worn by the girls between the wrist and the elbow Flaps attached to blouse - Karya Karya not found in unmarried women

A widowed woman is bound to remove karya gugri

After the marriage was consummated the groom gives a square silver pendant (tali, bottu) to the bride. A new one is added with every child birth. Finally, all of them are melted to a single big pendant which serves as a visible proof of the fruitful marriage . The kodi sadak, a long ribbon with cowries stitched on it which dangles down a skirt from the waist

Rani Bai was interested in Hand Embroidery from childhood and pursued it as a hobby. As soon as she came back from school she used to start working on Bags and Ghagra cholis. Cholis were priced at Rs.25 per piece and the Ghagra was Rs.50 per piece. She managed to make 4 Ghagra Choli sets in day as she started working fast. After she got married she started her own business with 1 single machine. Then she went on to give Training to girls. Presently she has an experience of 35 years. Interview - 2 Mrs. Rani Bai
