BARRIERS OF COMMUNICATION Communication barriers are something that prevents us from correctly getting and accepting the messages others use to communicate their information, thoughts and ideas. Many times we are misunderstood because of our actions or choice of words. And oftentimes, we speak what is in our mind or give some instructions, but it results to miscommunication because of barriers In order to avoid this from happening, you must learn to become an effective communicator.

TYPES OF BARRIERS 1. Emotional barriers -is a mental block that influences how you perceive others actions and prevents you from clearly communicating your feelings. 2. Use of jargon or unfamiliar terms - Is the language of specialized terms used by a group or profession and used sensibly can be quick and efficient way of communicating. 3. Lack of confidence - can be a major barrier to effective communication. Shyness, difficulty being assertive, or low self-worth can hinder your ability to make your needs and opinions known.

4. Noisy environment -can be defined as any barrier preventing an effective communication process. The noise might distract the receiver, causing them not to hear the sender’s message properly .

Communication Barriers Example Solution 1. Emotional Barriers You enter your room and you see your little sister holding your favorite figurines and some are on the floor scattering into pieces. You wanted to explode. You are in the gymnasium attending a symposium about drugs. The speaker reads his presentation fast and speaks in a low voice without variations. You lack interest to listen. Recognize these kinds of emotions. Then control your temper, relax for a while, calm yourself and be optimistic. Pause for a while to rest, then stay focused. Also, think of the purpose for being there and find a way to regain interest by understanding what the speaker is pointing out. You may also raise your hand to inform the speaker of these inconveniences in a polite manner. The table below presents some barriers to effective communication with corresponding solutions

Communication Barriers Example Solution 2. Use of jargon or unfamiliar terms You have a talk about health and nutrition in one of the remote barangays in your municipality using English as a medium. While talking, some of your audience are looking at each other. To avoid communication breakdown due to lack of clarity and understanding, adjust your language to the level of your audience. Use layman’s terms or simple words only.

Communication Barriers Example Solution 3. Lack of communication Your teacher assigns you to deliver an informative speech in the text class meeting. You do not know how to do it because you are shy to be in front of your classmates. Develop self-confidence by joining organizations and school and community activities where you can share and develop your interests and potentials. Identify your strengths and improve your weaknesses to become a good and effective speaker.

Communication Barriers Example Solution 4. Noisy environment You prepare yourself by reviewing your notes for the quarterly assessment while your brother is playing his electric guitar. You cannot concentrate well because of the noise. Talk to your younger brother politely to give you time to study quietly. Look for a quite area in your house where you can resume your study.
