INTRODUCTION Communication is the process of transmitting information . If the information is transparent as such into mind of receiver then it is a perfect communication. Sometimes we had an experience of communication i.e. there does not exist a perfect communication . Any thing that obstruct the flow of communication is known as barrier to communication. Barriers may lead to your message becoming distorted and there is risk of wasting both time and money by causing confusion and misunderstanding . Some of the barriers of communication are:- P sychological barriers Physical barriers Physiological barriers Language barriers Cultural barriers Gender barriers Emotional barriers Interpersonal barriers 4

Physiology is the state of human body and mind. Physiological barriers of communication occur due to the physical condition of pharmacist or patient which might even be physical disabilities. It includes sensory dysfunction and other physical dysfunctions. Effective communication requires proper functioning of the senses in both the sender and the receiver. Limitation of human body and mind adds up to the physiological barrier causing interruption in message from reaching its destination or having meaning. 6
It includes the environmental and natural condition which act as A barrier in communication Causes:- Noise Environment Time and Distance Information Overflow PHYSICAL BARRIER 7
Physical barrier is the environmental and natural condition that act as a barrier in communication in sending message from pharmacist to patient. Distractions related to environment interfere with the communication process. Examples of physical barriers in case of a pharmacist might include- The height of prescription counter Crowd and noise in the are of pharmacy Lack of privacy etc. 8

When messages are sent by the sender , physical barriers like doors, walls, distance, etc. makes the communication less effective. Causes of this kind of barrier are:- Environmen t: natural noises like thunder, rain wind, etc. and fluctuating temperature Time and distance Information overflow : when information becomes more than that can be received at a particular time by the receiver, then communication fails . 9

Culture BARRIER People belonging to different culture have different mindset, language, sign, symbol etc. when people belonging to different culture communicate, these factors can become barriers. Causes of this barrier: Language Sign and Symbols Religion Eye Contact 11
LANGUAGE BARRIER Communication becomes difficult in situation where peoples ddo not understand each others language Causes:- Regional Ascents and Dialects , Use of jargons, Difference In language and unclear speech , Grammar and Spelling . 12
The process of translating is always a concern as we try to ensure that any information is given to the patient correctly while his or her questions are asked and answered appropriately. Using a family member translator is helpful, but the information is somehow distorted due to the dynamics of the relationship. Remember , when patients understand their medications and why they are taking them, they are much more likely to follow through with their therapy. 13 13
GENDER BARRIER At work place women and men share equal status, knowledge and experience, different communication style prevent them from working together effectively. This is known as gender barrier. 14
WAY OF OVERCOMING THIS BARRIER ARE:- By educating the team about gender bias and by creating safe identity work spaces . These barriers arise because men and women have a different way of communication and each feels uncomfortable while talking to other 15
INTERPERSONAL BARRIER Interpersonal communication skills are important . Pharmacists in all practice settings have opportunities to interface with patients, whether it is counselling , interviewing, or educating . Pharmacists promise to utilize their clinical knowledge and skills to provide the best care for their patients . Patients , in turn, provide pharmacists with the information needed to effectively manage their drug therapy. 16
EMOTIONAL BARRIER Pharmacist must remain empathetic towards the patient but not get too involved . Another potential barrier includes emotional barrier. Although physical and emotional barriers are related to each other, but these must be treated separately. Patients must also be referred to the professionals who can assist them with their issues. 17
