Team sports and other activities

Sports has reshaped the way people interact with one another. It teaches about discipline, camaraderie, and sportsmanship. All these benefits help build people’s character and develop their relationship with others. Sports is popular in the Philippines because Filipinos simply enjoy playing these sports or have fun watching how athletes compete. These are five major team sports in the country. These are baseball, softball, football or soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Playing team sports develops friendship and promotes learning from each other’s mistakes among the members of every team. They learn how to accept defeat and acknowledge that the other team is better than them, so they are challenged. Players learn first-hand on how to achieve success through hardwork .

baseball

Baseball a bat and ball game played between two teams of nine players each who take turns batting and fielding . The batting team attempts score runs by hitting a ball that is thrown by a pitcher, with a bat swung, then running counter clockwise around a series of four bases, first, second, third, and home pate. A run is scored when a player advances around the base and returns to home plate.

Baseball Philippines is a start-up baseball circuit established in 2007 as a joint venture between Community Sports Incorporated and Pureplay Sports Management Incorporated in partnership with the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association and sanctioned by the Philippine Sports Commission. Althought the teams are regional-based, the games are held at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Manila. As of 2010, the league plays at Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa and at the Felino Marcelino Baseball Stadium in Taguig . The Philippine Amateur Baseball Association (PABA) is the national governing body for amateur baseball in the Philippines. The Philippine National baseball team represents the country and competes international baseball matches and tournaments. It is organized by the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association. They won the gold medal at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games Biennial Meet.

BASICE TOOLS OF BASEBALL BASEBALL – around 9 inches (23 centimeters) in circumference with a rubber or cork center, wound in yarn, and covered in white cowhide with red stictching .

BAT – hitting tool, traditionally made of a single, solid piece of wood. Other materials are now commonly used for non-professional games. Formerly, it is a hard, round stick about 2.5 inches (6-4 centimeters) in diameter at the hitting end, tapering to a narrower handle and culminating in a knob.

GLOVE or MITT – fielding tool, made of padded leather with webbing between the fingers.

The Basic Stance It is essential for the coach to look at each part of a batter’s stance if there are any flaws starting at the feet and working upwards point by point. The batter has to observe the following: Bat points up. Hands together, an inch from end of the bat. Chin tucked onto front shoulder, front shoulder tucked towards plate and down a bit. Grip bat firmly, ”feel” strength in wrists. Bend waist forward a bit. Hands up, even with and slightly behind rear shoulder, about six inches out. Weight a bit forward, towards plate, on ball of toes, a bit more on rear foot. Bend knees a bit, enough to feel loose. Rear foot should be places at he back a bit farther from the plate than the front door. Feet should feel balanced. Feet as wide apart as the outside shoulders. Stand as deep as allowed in the batter’s box. Be still. No dancing, no wiggling bat, no wiggling hips. Still but not stiff.

Skills of the game - There are three basic skills in baseball that should be practiced until the grips and the strikes are correct.

Hitting I t is the easiest skill to teach. A good grip must be well-practiced. Another important factor in batting or hitting is the correct swing of the arm. The steps in proper hitting are the following: Swing level, keep head down and front shoulder level as long as possible. Move hands directly at the ball. Open the hips toward the field with power but not too soon. Extend the arms. Hit through the ball and follow through as level as possible. Step into the pitch towards the pitcher, driving off the back toe. Get a good pitch in the strike zone. As with the stance, look at each part of the swing specifically.

Normal grip – larger fingerbones are lined up, knuckles and larger finger joints are line up. Tight or closed grip – separate wrists a bit more. Knuckles on top hand are over large finger joints on lower hand, and vice versa (closed grip gives more power).

2. Pitching This is the skill that involves throwing the ball to the batter. The correct way of holding and gripping the ball should be studied. hold the ball in such a way that your fingers are like claws of big bird. The tips of the fingers, not the palm, control the ball. If the hand is small, all three middle fingers may be placed on top Proper grip – ball not set too deeply into hand.

3. Fielding this is throwing and catching. Running is important in baseball. Ready to run, low, can move quickly in either direction. Proper stance as ball is pitched. Body low, knees bent, waist bend, balanced, glove down and out, head up, poised.
