WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? The word communication is derived from a Latin word meaning “to share.” Communication can be defined as “purposefully and actively exchanging information between two or more people to convey or receive the intended meanings through a shared system of signs and (symbols )” The process of: Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place to another . The process of sending and receiving information. A process because it involves protocols
Two-way process of reaching mutual understanding, in which participants not only exchange (encode-decode) information but also create and share meaning. Communication can be defined as the process whereby speech, signs or actions transmit information from one person to another. It involves transmitting information from one party to another.

Purposes of communication To impart information and attitudes To establish, acknowledge or maintain links or relations with other people To express opinions, beliefs and feelings To share or exchange ideas To develop efficient and effective use of English Language in written and other forms
MODES of communication Spoken or Verbal Communication : face-to-face, telephone, radio or television and other media. Non-Verbal Communication : body language, gestures, how we dress or act - even our scent. Written Communication : letters, e-mails, books, magazines, the Internet or via other media. Visualizations : graphs and charts , maps, logos and other visualizations can communicate messages.

NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION 85 % of our communication is non-verbal Body language communicates more than what our voices do. Eg . Gestures Your mouth may say something whilst your body is communicating something else.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION complex and requires good writing skills mostly used in a formal setup detaches the communicator from the message being conveyed- no gestures usage of text and pictures Requires a lot of discipline

LEVELS OF COMMUNICATION Interpersonal Face to face communication between two people, in a group or a lecture. It takes place socially and in the business world all the time. One should take into consideration their audience, how they are going to perceive the message and respond
One to one communication : between one officer and another of the same or different position to solve problems, give instructions, or discuss important issues that affect the organization Small group communication : between 3 or more people (not exceeding 20) for briefing or discussion Large group communication : comprising of more than 20 people for meetings, workshops and other different purposes External communication: between organization personnel and customers, the public and media
