Communication The exact meaning of the word communicate is ‘to share’ or ‘to participate’. the process of sending and receiving messages through verbal or nonverbal means, including speech, or oral communication; writing and graphical representations.

Verbal Communication is defined as using written or spoken words for communicating. It is a practice that we perform daily. Effectively conveying your idea or message needs more than just talking, and here, effective verbal communication skills come into play. Verbal communication is sometimes mistaken for the only oral way of communication but there are two ways through which verbal communication is practiced: oral verbal communication and written communication.

2 Ways of Verbal communication 1. When verbal communication is done through the mouth, it is called  oral communication . It can be done in many ways, including direct conversation, telephonic conversation, speeches, discussions, presentations, etc. 2. When verbal communication is done in written form, it is called  written communication . In written communication, words are used in writing to convey messages. It can be done by sending letters, SMS, reports, circulars, bulletins, etc.

4 Types of Verbal communication 1. Intrapersonal Communication In this type of communication, one communicates to self. This is a private communication which one does with self. One talks to self and articulates thoughts. Talking or communicating with oneself can help in gaining more confidence and bring more clarity in thoughts. 2. Interpersonal Communication This type of communication is done on a one-one basis. In this type, two individuals communicate with each other. Performing this type of communication is very effective as it helps one to convey thoughts and information directly.

3. Small Group Communication Small group communication is done for meetings or discussions. Being an active participant in small group meetings is essential if you want everybody to get your message. It is also crucial to give a chance to everybody in the small group. 4. Public Communication Small group communication is done for meetings or discussions. Being an active participant in small group meetings is essential if you want everybody to get your message. It is also crucial to give a chance to everybody in the small group.

Non Verbal Communication is defined as a way of communicating through nonverbal signals without using written or spoken words or other verbal mediums. This form of communication has long been acknowledged as an essential part of interpersonal communication. Your nonverbal communication abilities can make a favorable (or wrong) impression.

Communication Process refers to the exchange of information (a  message ) between two or more people. For communication to succeed, both parties must be able to exchange information and understand each other. If the flow of information is blocked for some reason or the parties cannot make themselves understood, then communication fails.

Elements of Communication process

Sender The communication process begins with the  sender , who is also called the  communicator  or  source . The sender has some kind of information — a command, request, question, or idea — that he or she wants to present to others. For that message to be received, the sender must first encode the message in a form that can be understood, such as by the use of a common language and then transmit it.

Receiver The person to whom a message is directed is called the  receiver  or the  interpreter . To comprehend the information from the sender, the receiver must first be able to receive the sender's information and then decode or interpret it.

Message The  message  or  content  is the information that the sender wants to relay to the receiver. Additional  subtext  can be conveyed through body language and tone of voice. Put all three elements together — sender, receiver, and message — and you have the communication process at its most basic.

Medium Also called the  channel , the  medium  is the means by which a message is transmitted. Text messages, for example, are transmitted through the medium of cell phones.

Feedback The communication process reaches its final point when the message has been successfully transmitted, received, and understood. The receiver, in turn, responds to the sender, indicating comprehension.  Feedback   may be direct, such as a written or verbal response, or it may take the form of an act or deed in response (indirect).
