Basic Concepts of Computers

What is a computer? INTRODUCTION A computer is an electronic device capable of performing arithmetic and logical operations. It can also store a large volume of information. Arithmetic operations involve the general mathematical calculations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

Definitions According to IEEE Computers Society – “A machine that can be performed to manipulate symbols. Computers can perform complex and repetitive procedures quickly, precisely and reliably and can quickly store and retrieve large amounts of data”.

How does a computer works? INPUT consists of Data & instruction . PROCESS is a set of instructions stored in the computer to carry Out the instructions given by the user. The process is also called a program. OUTPUT is the set of results generated after processing the Input.

Computer is basically consist of two parts : Hardware Software HARDWARE are the physical components of the Computer System which we can touch. Example :- Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor, Printer etc. SOFTWARE are the logical components of the computer system. These are basically the programs and information stored in the computer. These are of two types System software (Example : Operating System) Application software (Example : Utilities Software, MS office etc)

Characteristics SPEED : The speed with which the computer works can be understood by the units of measurement of time within a computer. They are : MILLI SECOND – 1/1000 TH OF A SECOND MICRO SECOND – 1/1000 TH OF A MILLI SECOND NANO SECOND – 1/1000 TH OF A MICRO SECOND PICO SECOND – 1/1000 TH OF A NANO SECOND STORAGE : A computer can store a large volume of information. ACCURACY : A computer never makes any mistake.

VERSITALITY : Computers are versatile machines and are capable of performing any task as long as it can be broken down into a series of logical steps. The presence of computers can be seen in almost every sphere – Railway/Air reservation, Banks, Hotels, Weather forecasting and many more. Diligence : Unlike human beings, computers are highly consistent. They do not suffer from human traits of boredom and tiredness resulting in lack of concentration. Computers, therefore, are better than human beings in performing voluminous and repetitive jobs.

Advantages 1.It is the fastest medium of communication rendering postal and telegraphic communication almost worthless . 2.Through computer your message or any thing written or photograph can reach any part of the world using internet facilities . 3.You can download any amount of material through computer. 4.All your arithmetical problems can be easily sorted out through computer. 5.Through video conferencing you can not only see each other but also talk with any body living in any part of the world.

Disadvantages (i) Computers can’t Think: Computers cannot think and they can’t do any job unless they are first programmed with specific instructions for same. They work as per stored instructions. Algorithms are designed by humans to make a computer perform a special task. This is also called artificial intelligence. (ii) Computers can’t Decide: Computers are incapable of decision making as they do not possess the essential elements necessary to take a decision i.e. knowledge, information, wisdom, intelligence and the ability to judge. (iii) Computers can’t Express their Ideas: In any type of research ideas plays a vital role. In this context, computers can’t express their ideas. (iv) Computers can’t Implement: Though computers are helpful in storage of data and can contain the contents of encyclopedias even, but only humans can decide and implement the policies.
