Classification Age classification is a age rating to directly communicate to the audience what age is appropriate for watching. Varying on the amount of gore and violence as well as glorification of drug abuse, sex and swearing; the age can range from U for universal to R18 for 18 and older.
U This U symbol stands for universal which means that the film is suitable for all ages four and over. The films related to this age rating are mostly aimed at children with possible very mild bad language. Cartoon violence if mild can be acceptable in this category.
PG The PG symbol stands for parental guidance which means that its suitable for general viewing but some scenes in the film may be classed as unsuitable for younger viewers. The parents can decide whether the film would be suitable for their child. A PG film will not include themes that is inappropriate for a child.
12 12 rating on DVDs have this rating when the cinema have the rating 12A. This is because viewing the film with an adult cannot be forced in the home, so the 12 rating remains for the DVD/Blu-Ray, instead the 12A rating. The 12 is also a simpler system for retailers as it means they cannot sell the DVD unless the customer is over the age of 12.
12A 12A films requires an adult to accompany any child under the age of 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema. Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film should contemplate whether the film is suitable for that child. Strong language may be passed at 12 or 12A depending on the manner it was used in.
15 People under the age of 15 are not allowed to see a 15 film and the cinema or allowed to buy 15 rated DVD/Blu-Ray as 15 films are not suitable for children under the age of 15. 15 films can include things such as strong violence, frequent strong language and drug abuse.
18 No 18 rated films are suitable for children. 18 films will include things such as very strong violence and language, strong blood and gore, strong portrayals of sexual activity and discriminatory language and behaviour.
R18 R18 films are a special and legally restricted classification mainly for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas, and DVDs may be sold to adults only in licensed sex shops.
