BECOMING A MEMBER OF A SOCIETY

In your own words ,what is a society?(100 words) How to become a responsible member of a Society (200 words)

1.What does the picture show? 2.Are these acts of conformity or deviance? If so what is the difference between conformity and deviance?

Enculturation Berry, Poortinga , Segall , and Dasen (2002) define enculturation   as “a form of cultural transmission by which society transmits its culture and behavior to its members by surrounding developing members with appropriate models”

A good  example is the millennial in our country who have easily adopted the cultural learning  of other countries especially Korean culture. They love eating Korean food, watching K-dramas , listening to K-pop music, even imitating the fashion style and dancemoves of their favorite Korean pop artists

Socialization Socialization   generally refers to the process of social influence through which a person acquires the culture or subculture of his/her group, and in the course of acquiring these cultural elements, the individual's self and personality are shaped.

Values Refer to a society’s defined set of what is good and desirable, which form the foundation of how life should be lived. Lau and Chan (2021) define values as “standards or ideals with which we evaluate actions, people , things,or situations.

Norms Refer to rules and expectations that guide the individual’s behavior in his/her society. For example,if respect for the elderly is considered is a value, kissing the hands of the elderly( pagmamano )is part of norms.

Four types of social norms Folkways Mores Taboos law

Status It is simply understood as one’s social position in any given society. Ascribed status-When the social position is received at birth( e.g ) being son or daughter or an involuntary process ( e.g )being an orphan or widow)

Archived Status-Voluntarily gained through personal perseverance( e.g .being high school graduate, becoming a teacher, writer).

Agent of Socialization Refer to the entities or institutions that play a role in influencing or shaping the process of enculturation, namely the family, the S tate , the education system, peer group and mass media .

Family-Basic unit in any society, exerts the greatest influence on an individual personality. State-(typically represented by the government) ,the state through its management of both public and private matters which include family and relationships, also influence socialization. Education system-develops the individual’s knowledge, values , and skills for them to become productive members of society.

Peer group- plays a major role in influencing him/her during adolescence, the period when he/she is striving to form his/her identity. Mass media-It constantly helps in shaping and reshaping every society’s norms and values.

Conformity and Deviance;Innovation and Rebellion Conformity with values and norms may depends on forms of social control such as a system of laws and punishments. 3 TYPES OF CONFORMITY Compliance or group acceptance Internalization or genuine acceptance Identification or group membership

Compliance occurs when an individual accepts influence because he hopes to achieve favorable reaction from one another person or group. Internalization occurs when an individual accepts influence because the content of the induced behavior-the ideas and actions of which it is composed-is intrinsically rewarding.

Identification occurs when an individual accepts influence because he wants to establish or maintain a satisfying self-defining relationship to another person or group.

Deviance Sociologist William Graham Sumner formally defined as” a violation of estab ilished contextual, cultural,or social norms, wether folkways, mores,or codified law. Theoriticians identify atleast four reasons behind deviance:1.Individual heredity 2.group heredity 3.personal defeciency 4.Social failure.

Deviance can either be formal (form of deviance that violates existing laws)or informal (form of deviance that violates existing norms which are not formally covered by laws.)
