Setting yourself up for Success throughout your Senior Journey

SET Planning Term 3 At SET plans, you made decisions around ATAR, Rank or VET senior pathways. The timetable structure has been resolved according to your choices. B y determining your aspirations and dreams for your futures, you selected subjects which would motivate and engage you. No changes will occur unless a review of results reveals a student has not met the prerequisite for the subject preference. Term 4 is therefore a crucial time, because it is now that you cement ways of working which empower you to achieve your personal best outcomes moving into Senior.

TIME MANAGEMENT AND STUDY PLANNING Evidence suggests that time management and study planning align with academic outcomes (Ahmed, 2018). Mastering time management and having a study plan will enable you to approach Year 11 with a quiet confidence and greater certainty in your ability to navigate and control the various elements of your senior phase of learning. Application of these strategies will assist you in experiencing a more seamless transition to your senior phase of learning. “students who develop strong academic and self-regulatory self-efficacy beliefs are better able to manage their learning and to resist the temptations and social pressures to engage in behaviours…that can undermine their academic achievements. (Carroll, Houghton, Wood, Unsworth, Hattie, Gordon & Bower, 2009). Positive habit-building now is crucial. Let’s have a strong finish to Year 10.

Which strategies have we discussed this year? What strategies are part of your toolkit?

Set specific SMART GOALS at the beginning of every unit: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely (including strategies to achieve these). Interrogate incidental in-class and formal teacher feedback. Use this to help you focus on the ‘where to now’ for improvement. Preview each subject’s weekly overview and use these as your revision guides. Use CORNELL Note taking.

Constantly practice creating/writing/speaking in the mode of the assessment you are working towards. Complete lesson reviews and weekly reviews in each subject area. Use spaced practice, whereby you leave time after learning. For example, wait 1-2 weeks, then do revision and test yourself with practice questions or quizzes.

Focus on single tasking rather than multi-tasking. Students who multi-task and are interrupted by distractions, have lower results ( Gorlick , 2009). Use the Pomodoro technique (tomato shaped timer- 20-25 minutes study, followed by short break, repeat). Complete wider reading on the topic to add to your repertoire of understanding and to create more neural pathways. Exam Preparation Skills

REFLECT – WITH HONESTY How many of the strategies (previously taught this year and the strategies today) have you used or are you using? Consider the skills that you are carrying with you in your backpack on the journey towards Senior Schooling.

Take initiative in your learning in and outside of the classroom. Self-regulate your engagement and commitment. Connect with your teachers and peers. Be aware of your responsibility to yourselves, others, and the potentially powerful and positive impact your actions have. Intellectually challenge yourself to actively participate and have a voice in lessons. Developing these ways of being and intentional habits in Year 10, will set you up for a more success in the senior phase. Engage in your studies to their potential, so you can begin senior studies in 2026, positively. As an engaged and self-regulated Year 10 student you should seamlessly transition to Year 11. FEEL EMPOWERED

Strive and achieve your best! Finish well! Finish strong!
