Introduction Bed making is one of the important nursing techniques To prepare various type of bed for patient or client to ensure comfort and useful position for a particular condition.

Definition it is made with the patient for a patient who can’t get out of the bed . OR bed making is a technique in which an area is provided for the client or patient for him to be comfortable and to do his activities of daily living.

Purpose To provide the patient comfortable and safe bed To prevent bed sore. To promote cleanliness. to give the unit a ward neat and clean. To give medical and nursing care to the patient. To save energy and. Time . To provide rest and sleep. To prevent infection.

Equipment Bed / cot metal rods / spring wood. Mattresses firm , thick , smooth with washable covers. Bed spread / top sheet Draw mackintosh below the knee Draw sheet cotton from side to side Blanket pillow cover Mattress cover

Types of bed Open bed Closed bed / unoccupied bed Occupied bed Cardiac bed Fracture bed Operation bed Post operative bed Amputation bed. Orthopaedic bed

1. Open bed Open bed is a suitable Comfortable And appropriate for hospital Open bed made an usual and one corner of the linen is folded back to Let the patient in the top linen is fan folded to the foot End of the bed or to one side of the Bed.

2. Closed bed #. A closed bed is anempty , in which the top cover are arranged beneath the spread is fully protected from dust and dirt while waiting for the patient. #. An unoccupied bed is an empty bed and is fully covered with a counter pane to protect it from dust and dirt.

3. Occupied bed Occupied bed is made for a patient who can’t get out of the bed. Occupied bed is making comfortable bed when patient is unable to get out of bed It is usually done by two persons.

4. Operation bed. Postoperative bed is prepared to receive patient who had undergone surgical procedures Postoperative bed is prepared for a patient who is recovering from the effects of anaesthesia following a surgical operation.

5. Cardiac bed Cardiac bed is used to help the patient to assume a sitting position which can Afford which an afford him greatest amount of comfort with least certain. cardiac bed is used for the patient with the patient with heart disease or dyspnea to provide easy breathing for the patient with minimum strain

6. Fracture bed Fracture bed is used for a patient with fracture of the trunk or extremities to provide firm To support by the support by the use of firm matters

7. Amputations bed Amputation bed or stump bed or divided bed which is used by the nurse for the patient after amputation of the lower limb. Amputation or stump bed is used for the patient whose leg is amputated

8. Post operative bed Post operative bed is a special bed prepared to receive and take care of a patient returning of surgery.

9. Orthopaedic bed An orthopaedic mattress is designed to provide specific support for your back and joints. 

Procedure Occupied bed occupied bed is made for a patient who can’t get out of the bed. Making a bed comfortable bed when a patient is unable to get out of bed. Purpose : - to provide comfort for patient whose physical condition confine to bed. - to change the soiled bed linen Equipment : - chair / stool Duster Basin with disinfectant solution Hamper to collect soiled linen. Comfort measure / back rest , foot rest K basin , bp apparatus and oxygen access if needed

Procedure :- Wash hand thoroughly. Organize the article at the bedside use Remove all pillows on his left side Trun the patient on his left side . If the patient is very ill call for assistance Fan fold the top sheet lengthwise, mackintosh and then draw sheet on the left side Dust the mattress with a dry duster . Then lift the mattress with one hand and clean the cot with a damp duster Bring the mackintosh back into the place and tuck it tightly under the mattress Trun the patient on his right side and and go to the apposit side of the bed Remove the soiled line and put them in the laundry bag

Position patient comfortably . Cover the patient with top sheet up to shoulder level. Replace towel and blanket and use side rails if needed.
