a style of parent/child interactions
that focuses on a positive and
pleasant approach.
Effective behavior management
needs to be applied consistently
across all areas of your child's life
Be enthusiastic and let your child
know you love them and approve
of their positive behaviors
BEHAVIOR
◦any action that can be seen or
heard
BEHAVIOR IS NOT
Your reaction to the situation
Your interpretation of the situation
Your expansion of the situation
A=Antecedent
What usually happens before the behavior,
and may set off the behavior?
B=Behavior
What actually happens during the
behavior?
C=Consequence
What immediate and delayed reactions
follow from the individual, other people
and the environment?
When the behavior is followed
by a pleasant consequence, it
is more likely to reoccur.
When the behavior is followed
by an unpleasant
consequence, it is less likely to
reoccur.
Modelling
Ignore undesirable behavior
Choose reinforcers that are
meaningful to the child
Bribe vs Reinforcement
Choose reinforcersthat are
meaningful to the child, change them
often.
Give these rewards in tiny amounts.
Give positive reinforcement
immediately after the desired
behavior has occurred so that it
will shape the child's future
behavior.
Be specific when you praise
desirable behavior
The statements used as praise
should vary
Use lots of praise, both verbally
and non-verbally
Catch your children being good
Removing the child from any
positive stimulus ( time out)
Communicate your expectations
with a minimal number of rules
and routines to be followed.
Involve the child when you are
establishing rules and routines.
Ask for his/her assistance. Make
sure they repeat them -this will
help them remember.
Provide opportunities for the child
to reiterate expectations. For
example: "What always needs to
be done before bed?”
