Introduction Paintings during the Spanish period in the Philippines were characterized by the introduction of Western styles, particularly religious themes like saints, the Holy Family, and scenes from the Bible, to spread Catholicism. Early works featured static, frontal religious icons, but later, particularly in the 19th century, secular subjects such as landscapes, fashion, and portraits of Filipinos emerged.
Paintings "La Inmaculada Concepción" (The Immaculate Conception) , and it is attributed to Juan Rodríguez Juárez , a prominent Mexican painter from the 18th century .
Paintings The painting depicts the Virgin Mary as the Imaculate Conception , a common Catholic subject especially popular in Spanish colonies. Mary is shown standing on a crescent moon , surrounded by cherubs and angels , in line with the iconography described in the Book of Revelation . She is adorned in rich, ornate robes , often symbolic of purity and divinity, and a crown above her head suggests her status as Queen of Heaven . At the bottom, a serpent with a human face is crushed beneath her, symbolizing Mary's triumph over sin and evil (a reference to the prophecy in Genesis 3:15). The angels hold various Christian symbols: lilies for purity, mirrors , and the monstrance (symbolizing the Eucharist).
Paintings Juan Rodríguez Juárez Born in Mexico (New Spain) in 1675, part of a prominent family of artists. Known for his religious-themed paintings and Baroque style , which often included rich details and spiritual symbolism.
The painting shows dead or dying gladiators being dragged from a Roman arena into the spoliarium , a chamber beneath the Colosseum where bodies were stripped of armor and discarded. The scene is dark, chaotic, and emotionally intense , with vivid expressions of pain, grief, and indifference. Though set in ancient Rome, Spoliarium is an allegory of the Filipino experience under Spanish colonial rule —the gladiators symbolizing oppressed Filipinos, and the spectacle representing the cruelty of colonizers. It reflects nationalist sentiments and a critique of colonial brutality.
The Santo Niño de Cebu is a statue of the Child Jesus, dressed in royal robes and a crown. It is considered the oldest religious relic in the Philippines, brought by the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. The image symbolizes Christianity and the deep Catholic faith of Filipinos. The statue is highly venerated, especially in Cebu, and the feast of Santo Niño (Sinulog Festival) is celebrated annually with grand festivities.
This 17th-century ivory and wooden statue is one of the most popular and revered Marian images in the Philippines , where it is enshrined in the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Manaoag in the town of Manaoag , Pangasinan.
ARCHITECTURE
The Arch of the Centuries (Arko ng mga Siglo) , which was originally a gate called the Puerta del Colegio from the first University of Santo Tomas (UST) campus in Intramuros , Manila.
The large circular stone structure found within the ruins of Intramuros in Manila is the archaeological ruins of the Baluarte de San Diego . More specifically, the circular stone ruins are part of the complex that includes the Baluarte de San Diego (a bastion shaped like an "ace of spades") and the ruins of the older structure it replaced, which was a circular fort or tower.
A religious folk dance from Batangas, Philippines , dedicated to the Holy Cross of Alitagtag , which involves prayer, songs, and dance. The dance originates from Bauan and Alitagtag , embodying humility and prayer through its stooped movements, with distinct actions for male dancers (shuffling and hitting the ground with a bamboo stick) and female dancers (delicate wrist and finger movements). It is performed during auspicious events, such as the Feast of the Mahal na Poon or the Sublian Festival in Batangas City, to fulfill a vow or honor the Holy Cross.
A Philippine folk dance that illustrates a flirtatious courtship between a man and a woman through a series of hide-and-seek movements, often using fans or handkerchiefs. The name is derived from the Spanish word for "affectionate" or "lovable"
a Filipino verse narrative about the life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, derived from the Spanish word " pasión " (passion). It is a popular Holy Week ritual in the Philippines called Pabasa ng Pasyon , where people chant the poem in a continuous, communal singing tradition that has indigenous roots.
A serenade tradition where a man sings love songs to woo a woman, accompanied by guitar
One of the most popular instruments introduced. Used in serenades ( harana ) , folk songs , and accompaniment for dances . Became a symbol of Filipino romantic and folk music .>
A 12-string lute-like instrument with a round body. Main melodic instrument in the rondalla ensemble . Played with a plectrum (pick), producing a bright, lively sound.
