Part 1
Introduction
What does the induction cover?
The program includes:
•your obligations under our OH&S Policyand The
WH&S Act
•how to comply with statutory requirements
•your duty of care for the environment
•how to identify and manage hazards on our sites
•other key operational practices.

We have tried to keep this program as brief as
possible. If you have any questions or comments,
please contact BEMS Maintenance Managers.
Always ask first.

Part 2
Requirements and Responsibilities
To work on SCH&HS sites you have to:
•complete the current induction program
•sign the Contractors’ Logbookat BEMS office before
starting work
•have a contractor identification badge visible at all times
•have your JSA with you on the job for auditing
purposes.
Depending on the nature of your work, you might also need
to comply with:
•other statutory requirements
•EPA permits
•current equipment and vehicle licences.

Work permits and licences
You need work permits for all medium to high-risk work, or other tasks
specific to the site.
You must be able to show your display your licences and permits on
request.
You require a work permit if you are working with:
•asbestos
•confined spaces
•electricity
•gas/water supply cut-off
•heights
•hot work (welding)
•trenching and excavation.

Vehicle parking
There is limited parking around all district facilities
You can be fined if you do not park your vehicle in a
valid parking area
Exits and Entrances
The entrances and exits to our sites are clearly
marked and therefore it is important that you
follow the relevant signage.
No smoking and no alcohol
SCH&HS is smoke-free and alcohol–free on campus

Behaviour on site
When you are on SCH&HS sites it is your responsibility to ensure your
work causes the minimum possible disruption to our staff, patients and
visitors.
SCH&HS will not tolerate offensive behaviour all staff and contractors are
bound by the principles of the Code of Conduct
Privacy and respect
•While working on SCH&HS sites, you may be provided with (or
discover) confidential information which belongs to SCH&HS or its
patients and staff members.
•This confidential information is protected under the Privacy Act, and it
is important that you do not disclose it or discuss it with anyone.
It is also an offence to:
•read medical records unless you are authorised
•access information on family, friends or co-workers.

Infection control
To minimise infection transfer:
Assess the risks
You must complete a written risk assessment for all works that can present high risks
to patients, staff or yourself.
Use barriers
Dust and debris must be contained within barriers at all worksites.
Clean up
Clean-up all dust and debris before you leave your work area.
Shut off
Once your job is finished, make sure you close openings in ceilings and walls.
Brush off
Don’t carry dust or debris on your clothing to other areas.
Get better
If you are sick, do not put our patients at risk, take time off.
Wash up
Always wash yourhands when you enter or leave wards

Emergency procedures
Locate and orientate yourself in each work unit with the
evacuation plan on the Wardens Station.
In an emergency situation:
•respond to all alarms
•follow instructions provided by authorised SCH&HS
staff or emergency service personnel
•if your are evacuating the building, go to the nearest
stairway or exit and proceed to the assembly area
•close the door behind you
•do not use the lifts
•when leaving the evacuation area, tell emergency
personnel so you are accounted for.

Fire doors
During the course of your work:
•do not leave fire doors chocked open, or
obstruct them for any purpose
•do not block or obstruct free access to any
fire extinguisher or fire fighting equipment
with your vehicle, tools or equipment under
any circumstances
•do not obstruct any doorway unless a full
JSA is completed

Plant, equipment and tools
General
You will be required to use your own tools and equipment
for the work you carry out on SCH&HS sites.
All electrical tools and equipment must have a currentTest
Tag, as per Electrical Safety Act.
Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Make sure all tools and loose equipment are securely
stored and removed from the site when you complete
the work.

Plant equipment and toolscontinued
Correct use
It is your responsibility to know the right way to use tools
Plant-powered mobile equipment
To operate any plant or powered mobile equipment at
SCH&HS sites, you must:
•complete all required training
•have the required certificates and licences
•check the plant before use and report any damage or
faults immediately
•where necessary, wear appropriate personal protective
clothing and equipment.

Housekeeping
It is your responsibility to:
•remove all accumulated rubbish and
keep the work area tidy
•keep roads, paths, walkways, aisle ways
and exits clear of tripping hazards such
as working materials, tools and
equipment
•wear appropriate protective clothing and
personal protective equipment

Noise exposure
It is important to protect yourself and those around
you from the harmful effects of noise.

If you are planning to use noisy plant or equipment

Protect yourself
Always wear earmuffs or plugs when you think
there is any danger of damage to your hearing.
Ensure you fit the earplugs correctly

Asbestos control
Before starting any work:
Get the register
Obtain the SCH&HS Asbestos register from the BEMS
department.
Locate areas
Check whether or not any asbestos has been located in the
area where you will be working.
If you suspect any materials may contain asbestos, stop work
immediately and notify your supervisor.
A reminder
Asbestos must only be removed by a Licensed Asbestos
Removalist.

Restrictedareas
There are several areas in SCH&HS sites designated as restricted
areas. Casual entry into these areas is strictly prohibited.
•Medical Imaging and related areas
•Plant rooms
•Food service areas (eg kitchens)
•Maintenance workshops
•Pharmacy and Laboratories
•MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
•Central Sterilising Unit
•Intensive Care Unit
•Maternity and Special Care Nursery
•Operating theatres

Construction: High risk work
When you are involved in high risk work, it is your responsibility
to:
•barricade or flag trenching and excavations
•use warning signs and flashing lights in poor visibility areas
•if there is a possibility of contaminants (such as a gas leak or
exhaust vapours), stay out of the area
•have the controls in place to prevent these events
•wear appropriate personal protective equipment and clothing
•have the appropriate emergency procedures in place during
work
•in the event of an accident, notify your supervisor immediately.

Working at heights and prevention of falls
It is important that you comply with appropriate
regulations for using ladders, scaffolding,
mobile towers, elevated work and platforms.
You must use appropriate controls if you have
to work:
•within three metres of any edge of roofs, pits,
or shafts
•near open edges when there is a possibility
that you might fall a distance of two metres
or more

Hot work: welding and cutting
If you are doing hot work at any SCH&HS
sites, you must:
•provide a work permit and ensure correct
isolation of Fire Alarm panel. Failure to
correctly isolate fire detection systems
may cause an alarm and you may be
liable of the costs incurred
•protect others by using signage, screens or
welding curtains at an appropriate height
•ensure that any cylinder storing
compressed gasses or hazardous
substances are stored in a safe and secure
upright position complete with flash
arrestors and away from heat at all times

Manual handling
You can suffer manual handling injuries when lifting,
lowering, carrying, pulling, holding or restraining.
You can be vulnerable to injury when you are:
•packing
•cleaning and sorting
•using hand tools
•operating machinery and equipment.

Chemicals -dangerous goods and
hazardous substances
Dangerous goods and hazardous
substances have the potential to seriously
affect your health and the health of others
in your work environment.
You are not permitted to bring any
dangerous goods and hazardous
substances onto SCH&HS sites without
the appropriate JSA, ensuring you have
the chemicals MSDS with you.

Waste management
To minimise the risk of contamination and illness on
SCH&HS sites, it is important to dispose of all waste as
soon as possible.
What is waste?
Waste is any left-over materials such as steel, concrete,
vinyl, linoleum, unused electrical materials or
chemicals.
It is your responsibility to remove (or to make
arrangements for the removal) of any waste material
from your area of work.

Vehicles and pedestrians
Your responsibilities
•For your own safety as well as the safety of
our patients, staff and visitors:
•do not enter or park in any restricted zone
•strictly obey all speed limits at all sites
•be vigilant, look around you and give
pedestrians the right of way.

Working in heat
Working in extreme heat is harmful and unsafe.
When will you be at risk?
•When wearing heavy protective clothing while working in
hot conditions.
•Working in hot conditions when you are not used to it.
What can you do?
•Take more frequent rest breaks.
•When resting remove personal protective clothing.
•Keep a water bottle with you and drink more water.
•For outdoor work, reschedule work to cooler times of the
day.

Electrical safety
If you are doing electrical work, you must be a
qualified electrician or electrical engineer.
In normal practice,work on low voltage
electrical installations will not be performed
with the installations live.
You will need a work permit to be able to work
on any live installations.

Barricading
If you need protection around your work area:
•use your own approved safety barriers or mesh
fencing
•fence (or cover with decking) all openings or
excavations while you are working
•provide appropriate warning signs to give adequate
warning to staff, visitors and patients
•when you are working above ground level, ensure
that you properly secure tools and materials to
prevent them from falling or becoming a trip hazard
•when you are working within our sites, provide
signage, barricades and traffic controls which meet
the Australian Standard.
•licensed traffic controllers if required

Documents you provide
Before you begin your work at SCH&HS, you will need to provide these
documents
Licences
Evidence of your qualification and licences including Construction Induction
Card
Permits
A relevant work permit for your proposed work (eg height work, confined
spaces, hot work, fire system, essential service isolation).
Induction record
Evidence that you have completed SCH&HS’s Induction Program and any
other related training as directed by your supervisor.
Insurances
Evidence of insurance cover and work cover.
Personal details
Information such as the ABN number of your company, mobile number and
company telephone number, company contact and your motor vehicle
registration.
Job analysis
A completed Job Safety Analysis (JSA) Certificate.

Documents we provide
Your supervisor will provide you, as needed, with:
•a signed copy of your JSA certificate
•a valid work permit for the duration of your job
•other instruction or maintenance manuals, drawings and
diagrams
•maps relating to your area of work
•emergency response information and contact numbers
•keys, access pass, etc
•contacts list

Documentation
Damage to plant and equipment
It is important for us that you report all damage to plant and
equipment to your supervisor in writing.
This includes:
•damaged ceiling tiles
•unsecured electrical cables
•suspicious-looking gas or water pipes
•broken pit lids
•PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) in fluorescent lights
•traces of contaminated substances
•incomplete or unfinished work or cleaning-up left by
another worker.

Accidents and incidents
We promote a safety culture at SCH&HS by promoting a
strong focus on reporting and investigating accidents
and incidents.
What are accidents and incidents?
Accidentsare unplanned events that have caused injury
or damage
Incidentsare near misses which are unplanned events
that could have causedinjury or damage.
What is your role?
While you are working at SCH&HS it is very important to
us that you take responsibility to:
•report all accidents and incidents to your supervisor
•complete an Incident report form.

Service reports
SCH&HS has many sites and we have a wide range of
contractors working at these sites
So when you completing your service report, it is very
important that you:
•identify and include the correct addressof the site where
you have completed your work
•obtain the supervisor’s signaturefor your completed
work.

Final Note
Your next induction is due in 12 months
As part of the districts commitment to OH&S, we conduct regular, random
safety behaviour audits.
SCH&HS reserves the right to have it’s staff stop any activity that is deemed to
be a risk to the safety of the staff, clients or the public.
