Oats The common oat ( Avena sativa ) is a species of creal grain on for its seed, which is known by the same name (usually in the plural, unlike other grains). oats are suitable for human consumption as oatmeal and rolled oats, Oats are also used in some brands of dog food and chicken feed. Origin The wild ancestor of Avena sativa and the closely related minor crop, A. byzantina , is the hexaploid wild oat A. sterilis . The modern oats draws its ancestory from the wild red oat,a plant originating in asia.oats have been cultivated for two thousand years in various regions throught the world,before being consumed as a food ,oats were used for medicinal puposes .a use which they are still honoured.
