DRY BERI-BERI 4
DEFINATION: It develops when diet chronically contains slightly less than the thiamin requirement SYMPTOMS: Poor appetite Peripheral neuropathy Fatigue Severe muscular weakness Deep muscle pain Pain on contact with the skin. 5
WET BERI-BERI 6
DEFINATION : It develops when the thiamin deficiency is more severe. SYMPTOMS : It is characterized primarily by: Edema of extremities Heart enlargement Cardiac insufficiency OTHER SYMPTOMS: Tachycardia Bradycardia Palpitation. 7
CEREBRAL BERI-BERI: 8
DEFINATION : It is also called as: WERNICKE-KORSAKOFF’S SYNDROME . Caused due to severe deficiency of Thiamin . PECULARITY: Seen most commonly in alcoholics compared to the general population; the chronic heavy alcohol consumption interferes with the intestinal absorption if thiamin . 9
Also can get worsen by a mutation in the gene for transketolase that results in reduced affinity of transketolase for TPP. SYMPTOMS: G astrointestinal symptoms: Anorexia Nausea Ataxia 10
DEFINATION: Observed in breastfed infants born to mother suffering from thiamin deficiency. The breast milk of these mothers is deficient in thiamin . SYMPTOMS: Cardiac dilation(enlargement of heart) Tachycardia Convulsions Edema Vomiting Abdominal colic In acute condition, infant may die due to cardiac failure. 13
