BHATSA DAM

Introduction
ï‚—BHATSA DAM is one of the
largest gravity dam in
Maharashtra.
ï‚—This project has done under
Govt of Maharashtra and
operated by various Govt.
Departments
• Construction work began in 1977 and completed in 1983.
• It is constructed with U.C.R. masonry.
• The dam has 5 nos of Radial gates of sizes 12m x 8m.
• The catchments area of the Dam 388.50 Sq. KMS
• The catchment area is located in heavy rainfall area
varying from 0 to 114.50 mm per hour.

ï‚—For navigational facilities
ï‚—Other additional utilization is to
develop fisheries
PURPOSE OF BHATSA DAM

Gravity Dams Gravity dam is the one in which
the external forces (water
pressure, wave pressure, silt
pressure) are resisted by the
weight of the dam itself
These dams are heavy and
massive wall-like structures of
concrete in which the whole
weight acts vertically
downwards
Reservoir
Force
As the entire load is transmitted on the small area of foundation, such dams
are constructed where rocks are competent and stable.
Self weight

Earth Dams:
ï‚—They are trapezoidal in shape
ï‚—Earth dams are constructed where
the foundation or the underlying
material or rocks are weak to
support the masonry dam or where
the suitable competent rocks are at
greater depth.
ï‚—Earthen dams are relatively smaller
in height and broad at the base
ï‚—They are mainly built with clay,
sand and gravel, hence they are
also known as Earth fill dam or
Rock fill dam

CONSTRUCTION OF SPILLWAY

Gate Control Room
For the centralized operation of the
spillway radial gates from the
control room, centralized hoist
motor control cubicle with
automatic and
manual interlocking is provided in
the control room.
The Gate Control system can be operated from the master control
station through the VHF network, which is a two way communication
media.
The Gates can be operated to manage the water outflow
The Gates can be also be operated manually from the Dam control
station, using the control system.

HYDRO ELETRIC POWER STATION
Vajra Fall Hydro-Power plant is power station located on Bhatsa river
approximately 6 km downstream of the Bhatsa dam near Shahapur, Thane
District in Maharashtra.
This plant supplies power to M/s. Tata Consultancy Services, utilizing the
Maharashtra State Electricity Boards grid, under open access policy. The
power is evacuated on a 100 KV line and injected line Maharashtra State
Electricity Distribution co. Ltd. Sub-station at Kumbhare.
