INTRODUCTION Vegetable oils and their derivatives (such as methyl esters), often called biodiesel, are prominent candidates as alternative diesel fuels. The use of vegetable oil in diesel engines is not a new concept; Rudolf Diesel used peanut oil as a demonstration fuel in 1900. But there are numerous problems associated with using direct vegetable oil as fuel for diesel engines such as high-viscosity engines, injection tanks, and engines. These problems can be solved to a certain extent by converting vegetable oils into methyl esters. This is done through the cross-classification reaction and the product is called biodiesel, the fatty acid methylester (FAME). Application of biodiesel in diesel engine results in lower emissions. The fuel properties of biodiesel are very similar to the diesel fuel so it can work in existing infrastructure for conventional diesel without any modification in diesel engine.
