STUDY OF INTERNET RESOURCES IN BIOINFORMATICS Dr. A. Ancy Jenifer Assistant Professor Dept. of Biotechnology SRM IST RAMAPURAM, CHENNAI-89

Bioinformatics is  a dynamic and emerging field of science that deals with an amalgamation of several subjects . These subjects include Biology , Chemistry , Mathematics , Statistics , and Computer Science . Bioinformatics focuses on developing new technologies in the fields of health , medicine , research, energy conservation , food sources and biotechnology .

WORD bioinformatics is made up of two parts. Bio- as in biology , and - informatics , which refers to information . B IOLOGICAL QUESTIONS ‘What microorganisms live in our mouths?’  ‘Where in the world do my ancestors come from?’  PROCESSING DATA BIOINFORMATICS R elies more heavily on COMPUTER SCIENCE

BIOINFORMATICIANS  Process and analyze the data through computer programming Experts - data mining techniques and statistical software

Specialized CANCER RESEARCH PERSONALIZED MEDICATIONS ANALYSIS OF PROTEIN STRUCTURE

All the information stored within the online databases available to anyone with web access  UNIQUE COMPONENT OF BIOINFORMATICS

Use of computers - most of the tasks in genomic data analysis are highly repetitive or mathematically complex . The use of computers is absolutely indispensable in mining genomes for information gathering and knowledge building .

LEARNING genomics, sequencing , genetics Why the COMPUTER is essential in BIOLOGY We must make a biology review Let us start with the Central Dogma But w hat is the Central Dogma?

The process by which the instructions in DNA are converted into a functional product. Central Dogma?

T he chemical that chromosomes and genes are made of. DNA itself is made up of four simple chemical units that are abbreviated as A, G, C, and T. These letters are used to form three letter words that cells can read.    CHROMOSOME It is simply a very long piece of DNA that cells can easily copy. Humans usually have 23 pairs of chromosomes. They are numbered 1-22 with the 23rd pair being either XX in girls or XY in boys. DNA

It is a stretch of DNA on a chromosome that has the instructions for making a protein. Each chromosome has many genes with humans having over 22,000 genes in all. A gene's instructions for a protein are written in the three-letter code  GENE PROTEIN It is a molecular machine that does a specific job. Some proteins like amylase help us digest food. Others like opsins help us see colors. And still others like the globins help our blood take oxygen to and carbon dioxide away from our cells.

INTERNET RESOURCES An  INTERNET RESOURCE  is any identifiable resource (digital, physical, or abstract) present on or connected to the  World Wide Web . Resources are identified using  Uniform Resource Identifiers  (URIs)

A database   is a structured collection of records stored in a computer system. Genomic databases typically store DNA or protein sequences as well as annotated information about those sequences. Many databases also provide bioinformatics tools, such as BLAST, for finding specific sequences or annotations. There are hundreds of genomics databases: some are comprehensive, but are not carefully curated ( GenBank ), while others are carefully curated, but are narrow ( FlyBase ).

Biological databases   are stores of biological information. The journal  Nucleic Acids Research   regularly publishes special issues on biological databases and has a list of such databases. The 2018 issue has a list of about 180 such databases and updates to previously described databases.   Omics Discovery Index  can be used to browse and search several biological databases.

Bioinformatics Tools

Bioinformatics Tools The National Center for Toxicological Research conducts research in both bioinformatics and chemoinformatics . The Center also develops and coordinates bioinformatics capabilities within NCTR, across FDA Centers , and in the larger toxicology community. These Bioinformatics Tools were created at NCTR with the goal of developing methods for the analysis and integration of complex omics (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) datasets .
