BIOREACTORS Its a device in which the organisms are cultivated and motivated to form the desired products. It’s a vessel in which cell cultivation is done under sterile condition and proper environmental condition.

Requirements Aseptic condition should be maintained. Their should be a controller system. Proper dosing mechanism. Flexiblity and long term stability.

SPECIFICATION OF A BIOREACTORS Bioreactors consists of following parts :- Agitator –Mixer used to mix the content. Baffle – Breaks the vortex formation. Sparger – Used to supply the oxygen/air. Jacket –Maintains the temperature .

Design Bioreactors should have following configaration . Microorganisms/ cells should perform 100% success rate. Proper controller systems should be provided. Construction should be from non toxic, resistant material, glass or stainless steel

Types Batch fermentor . Fed batch fermentor . Continuous batch fermentor . Bubble column bioreactors. Air Lift bioreactor. Fluidised bioreactor.

Batch Fermentor It’s a closed type of a fermentor . Only energy exchange is been seen. Cell growth and product concentration is propotional .

Fed Batch Fermentor It’s a semi type of fermentor . M atter and Energy is been exchanged. Addition and subtraction of components is seen. More safer and stable batch. Mostly used in waste water treatment.

Continuous batch fermentor It is an open type of fermentor . Media is been replaced by fresh media. Addition and substraction is seen at same time. Rate of working volume remains constant. Less problematic.

Bubble column bioreactors The air or gas is been intrtoduced Perforated plates are fitted to improve performance The bubble column is usually cylindrical The flow rate influence the performance factors

Air L ift Bioreactors The medium is divided in two zones. The zones are referred as riser and receiver. The dispersion flow and down flow is seen. Mixing and settlement of media is seen.

Fluidized bed bioreactor Its similar to bubble column bioreactor. Solids get settle and fluid gets flown out. Used to carry out reactions involving fluid suspended biocatalysts.

Photo bioreactors These are bioreactors specialised for fermentation. Exposure to sunlight or artifical illumination is seen. Important compounds are been produced eg -carotene, a sthaxanthin . They are made of glass or transparent plastic. Range of 25-40 C is maintained. Organisms grow in day light and products are produced at night.
