What is BIS ? The Bureau of Indian Standards ( BIS ) is the national Standards Body of India working under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Foods & Public Distribution, Government of India . It is established by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 which came into effect on 23 December 1986. A new Bureau of Indian standards (BIS) Act 2016 which was notified on 22 nd March, 2016, has been brought into force with effect from 12 th October, 2017. The Act establishes the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as the National Standards Body of India.

International Activities International Organization for Standardization (ISO):- ISO is an independent , non-governmental membership organisation and the world’s largest developer of voluntary International standards. International Electro-Technical commission(IEC):- IEC was founded in 1906 and is the world’s leading organization for the preparation of International Standards for all Electrical, Electronic and related Technologies.
Product certification BIS operates a product certification scheme for ensuring compliance to Indian standards presence of BIS standard mark on a product indicates conformity to the relevant Indian standards. BIS certification scheme is voluntary in nature. However for a number of products, compliance to Indian standards made mandatory by the central government under various statutes in public interest
Hallmarking Hallmarking of gold jewellery was started by BIS in April 2000 to provide third party assurance to consumes on the purity of gold jewellery or its fineness. The scheme for hallmarking of silver jewellery/artefacts was launched in October 2005
Laboratory services To protect consumer’s interest , BIS operates various conformity assessment schemes. Under these schemes, BIS grants licenses/registrations to such manufacturers who are capable of producing goods conforming to relevant Indian Standards, on continuous basis. To support these scheme, which requires testing of products on regular basis for checking conformity to the relevant Indian Standards, BIS has established a network of eight laboratories.

Training Services BIS imparts training through National institute of training for Standardization(NITS) to the technical and management personnel from industry, consumer organisations, public sector undertakings, government bodies The institute also conducts international training programmes for developing countries under different cooperation schemes of government of India.
