BLACK LEG
(Black Quarter, Quarter ill,
Symptomatic Anthrax)
•Inflammation of Muscle,
•Severe Toxemia,
•High Mortality,
•True Black Leg is common in Cattle,
–caused by Clostridium chauvoei
•False Black Leg (Malignant Edema, Gas
Gangrene) :-
–Cl. septicum,
–Cl. novyi
Epidemiology
•Soil Borne,
•Route of infection:
–Oral,
–Wound infection,
–Muscle damage: butt injuries, vaccination,
•Age-No age restriction in Sheep & Goats,
–But common up to one year age,
(6 months to 2 yrs in Cattle),
Pathogenesis
•Triggering mechanism not known,
•Toxins formed leads to,
–severe necrotising local myositis,
–Systemic toxemia & Death,(24-48 hrs),
Clinical Findings
•High temperature (107 C )
•Anorexia & Depression,
•Moderate to severe Lameness,
•Local Swelling (Swellings), Crepitating,
•Recovery is
rare,
Clinical Pathology
•Muscle impression Smears,
Necropsy Findings
•Per acute form & Acute form,
•Affected limb stuck out stiffly,
•Lateral Recumbancy,
•Bloating,
•Putrefaction occurs quickly,
•Blood stained froth from
nostrils (clots)
•Affected muscle black colored, swollen,
•When cut, Rancid odor, Metallic sheen on
the cut surface,
•Gas filled sero sanguineous fluid
•Various Quantity of blood stained
exudates in all body cavities,
Diagnosis & Treatment
•Diagnosis is by symptoms & lesions,
•Treatment,
–High dose of penicillin (10,000 IU / kg),
•Other supportive therapy,
Control
•Management, Preventing Fighting,
•Aseptic & Sterile precautions,
•Clean premises,
•Vaccination of Animals 2-3 weeks before
–lambing,
–shearing,
–docking and other operations,
