BLOOD : Composition and Functions BY- BIJI SARO VARGHESE Roll no:3654 B.Sc.III Sem-IV
BLOOD….??? Blood is a fluid connective tissue derived from mesoderm. It is bright red , slightly alkaline (pH7.4) and viscous. An average size adult has about 5 l of blood.
COMPOSITION OF BLOOD
CELLULAR COMPONENTS
ERYTHROCYTES Circular, biconcave, enucleated 4-5 million per cubic mm of blood in adult Average life span of 120 days. Formed in bone marrow &destroyed in liver and spleen. The RBCs contain respiratory pigment called hemoglobin. FUNCTIONS RBCs transport oxygen from lungs to tissue and carbon dioxide from tissue to lungs.
LEUCOCYTES Colourless, nucleated & phagocytic cells 5000-9000 per cubic mm of blood. Average life span of 3-4 days. Formed in bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes, thymus & payer's patches &destroyed by phagocytosis in blood, liver &lymph nodes .
TYPES
GRANULOCYTES
AGRANULOCYTES
THROMBOCYTES Anucleated , round to polygonal& biconvex 2.5-4.5 lakhs per cubic mm of blood. Average life span of 5-10 days. FUNCTIONS Aggregate at site of injury and form platelet plug. Release thromboplastin which helps in clotting of blood.
NON-CELLULAR COMPONENT PLASMA Straw coloured, slightly alkaline &viscous fluid. 93% water along with other solute 7% protein. Plasma proteins are albumin, globulin, fibrinogen & prothrombin . All cellular components are suspended in plasma. FUNCTIONS It maintains the viscosity of blood Transport dissolved oxygen
