How does Williams present Blanche as an outsider in the opening of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’? In addition to her alcoholism, Blanche’s mental fragility makes her an outsider to the rest of the characters in the play. Once left alone in the Kowalski’s apartment, she starts talking to herself ‘I’ve got to keep a hold of myself!’ , Williams ’ use of the metaphor suggests that she is struggling to maintain self control. T he stage directions describe Blanche as saying this ‘faintly ’; perhaps she is fearful of anyone hearing her as this would contradict the façade of arrogance and strength she is trying to construct. The use of the exclamation here further underlines the audience’s suspicion that Blanche is under stress and extremely uncomfortable in her new surroundings.
