Defination Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women . BMI is the latest tool to assess the amount of body fatness in a person. It is a calculation using a person's height and weight. It is a way of checking that a person is a healthy weight for their height. Health professional use BMI to determine if one is underweight, a healthy weight, overweight or obese.

BMI can provide an indication of weight categories that could lead to future health problem. BMI levels are interpreted differently for adults and children so different BMI calculators are used. BMI or Quetelet index , is a value derived from the mass (weight) and height of an individual.

Contd... The higher the BMI the more at risk the person is for having health problem. Body mass index  ( BMI ) is a value derived from the  mass  ( weight ) and  height  of a person. The BMI is defined as the  body mass  divided by the  square  of the  body height , and is universally expressed in  units  of kg/m 2 , resulting from mass in  kilograms  and height in  metres .

Consequences of elevated level in adults The BMI ranges are based on the relationship between body weight and disease and death. [26]  Overweight and obese individuals are at an increased risk for the following diseases: [27] Coronary artery disease Dyslipidemia Type 2 diabetes

The  WHO  regards a BMI of less than 18.5 as underweight and may indicate  malnutrition , an  eating disorder , or other health problems, while a BMI equal to or greater than 25 is considered overweight and above 30 is considered  obese . [12]  These ranges of BMI values are valid only as statistical categories.
