What is a Boiler ?

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF BOILER The boiler is essentially a closed vessel inside which water is stored. Fuel is bunt in a furnace and hot gasses are produced These hot gasses come in contact with water vessel where the heat of these hot gases transfer to the water and consequently steam is produced in the boiler This steam is piped to the turbine of thermal power plant

REQUIREMENTS OF A GOOD BOILER

CLASSIFICATION OF BOILERS 1 . ACCORDING TO CONTENT IN THE TUBES Fire tube boiler Boilers in which fire or hot gases is present inside the tube and water outside the tube Eg: Cochran , Cornish and locomotive boilers

Water tube boiler The boiler in which water is present inside the tubes and fire or hot gases surround these tube Eg: Lamont,Benson,Babcock and Wilcox boiler

FIRE TUBE vs WATER TUBE

2 . ACCORDING TO THE POSITION OF FURNACES Internally fired boiler - Furnace is located inside the shell Eg: Cochran and Lancashire boiler Externally fired boiler - Furnace is outside the shell Eg: Babcock and Wilcox Boiler 3 . ACCORDING TO THE CIRCULATION METHOD Natural circulation bo il er - Circulation of water in the boiler take place due to natural convection currents produce by application of heat Eg: Babcock and Wilcox boiler Forced circulation boiler- circulation of water is done by a forced pump Eg: Benson and Lamont boiler

4. ACCORDING TO THE AXIS OF SHELL Vertical boiler- axis of shell is vertical Eg: Cochran boiler Horizontal boiler- axis of shell is horizontal Eg: Babcock and wilcox boiler
