Written by author Chetan Bhagat, the book Five Point
Someone is set in the Indian Institute Of Technology, the
top engineering college in India, similar to MIT in America.
It was later turned into a hit movie called The 3 Idiots.
PLOT:-
The story revolves around Ryan Oberoi, an extremely
intelligent but free-spirited student. He believes that true
education comes from critical thinking and enjoying life, not
memorizing formulas and textbooks. Ryan and his friends
are elated at the idea of going to the prestigious IIT, but little
do they know about the pressure they will have to cope with.
The trios end up having a five out of ten grade point average,
which is a disaster!
The book starts off in a flashback mode, with Alok being
admitted to hospital and Hari reminiscing about what
happened. Hari, Ryan and Alok, join IIT, Delhi at same
time, are roommates and they become thick friends after
Ryan stands up for them during a ragging session. Though
all 3 of them have diametrically different views in life, they
bond together, and are referred to as Five Pointers after they
end up in bottom of the class. They hate the topper Venkat,
who they think is more of a robot than a human being.
The three are quite different characters, with Alok desperate
to get a high-paying job to help out his family including his
invalid father, and his sister, who has to get married off
while Ryan comes from a privileged household, but has
rarely seen his parents since early childhood because they
have been busy building their increasingly successful
business. Hari narrates most of the story, but interspersed in
his account are chapters in the voice of some of the other
characters his two friends and the girl he gets involved with
giving a bit more insight into their characters and Hari's
own. Throw in a love affair, emotional parents and student
indulgences like wine and women; you have a sure shot plot
for success.
THEME:-
The story is about friendship between the three boys. It
revolves around the 3 roommates and the girl whom Hari
loved. The scenes between the friends, their fights, their
misunderstanding are shown in an excellent manner.
MY OBSERVATIONS :-
Five Point Someone offers up enough action, drama, and
amusement at a steady pace to keep readers entertained. As
in Bhagat's other novels, this one is almost entirely about
friendship, as yet again a trio of young men gets thrown
together and, despite some strong disagreements, does their
best all for one and one for all act. Despite the often childish
simplicity of the story complete with extremely unlikely
events and several melodramatic ones it is admittedly
reasonably entertaining.
The book strikes the right note and the characters are very
realistic. Alok- a boy who never grew up, who had a
paralyzed father and an unmarried sister to look after… he
knew clearly what he wanted in life- a good job. Ryan- cool,
smart, intelligent, practical, a brave heart and who believe in
living life to the full’s .He knew completely that this was not
the kind of life he wanted. All he desired were his friends
and he would do anything for them. And then there is Hari-
another bumbling IITian who can’t get his grades or life in
order. He is hopelessly in love with Neha and all he wants in
life is his girlfriend or to be like Ryan, or, wait a minute, he
is confused!
