COMMUNICATION Communication is a process that involves sending and receiving messages through the verbal and non-verbal methods. Communication is a two-way means of communicating information in the form of thoughts, opinions, and ideas between two or more individuals with the purpose of building an understanding.

FORMS OF COMMUNICATION A common way to classify communication is by whether information is exchanged between humans, members of other species, or non-living entities such as computers. For human communication, a central contrast is between verbal and non-verbal communication.

VERBAL COMMUNICATION Verbal communication is a type of communication where we use spoken and written words to get our message and information across to the other person. In other words, whenever we use our words to express ourselves, our feelings, and our thoughts, we are verbally communicating. Yes, even when we are writing to someone, it is considered verbal communication. We use communication from the moment we wake up in the morning to the moment we close our eyes at night. Humans are social creatures, and it’s only natural that our communication methods have improved over time.

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION Nonverbal communication, transfer of information from one person to another without the use of words or spoken language. It can occur in a variety of ways, including through facial expressions, gestures, and body posture or position. Communicating nonverbally can occur through many types of behaviours. Some psychologists categorize nonverbal signals according to the sensory modalities they require, which are primarily auditory or visual, although tactile and olfactory signals may also be used.

PARA LANGUAGE Paralanguage, also known as vocalics , is a component of meta-communication that may modify meaning, give nuanced meaning, or convey emotion, by using techniques such as prosody, pitch, volume, intonation, etc. It is sometimes defined as relating to non phonemic properties only. Paralanguage may be expressed consciously or unconsciously. We speak paralanguage when we gasp, sigh, clear our throats, change our tone, whisper or shout, emphasize certain words, wave our hands, frown or smile, laugh or cry, string vocal identifiers like un-huh and ah-hah between our words, or speak faster or slower.

ICONIC SEMIOTIC Semiotics is the systematic study of sign processes and the communication of meaning. In semiotics, a sign is defined as anything that communicates intentional and unintentional meaning or feelings to the sign's interpreter. The semiotic tradition explores the study of signs and symbols as a significant part of communications. Unlike linguistics, semiotics also studies non-linguistic sign systems. Semiotics includes the study of indication, designation, likeness, analogy, allegory, metonymy, metaphor, symbolism, signification, and communication .

ORAL COMMUNICATION Oral communication is the exchange of information and ideas through spoken word. It can be directly in person in a face-to-face interaction or through an electronic device such as a phone, video platform or radio. The most effective way for businesses to transmit information verbally is through oral communication, such as a staff meeting, webinar and workshop. It is vital for learning and understanding those in your environment on a daily basis, both personally and professionally. It is a fundamental aspect of learning a language and helps solve problems .

VISUAL COMMUNICATION Visual communication is the use of visual elements to convey ideas and information which include signs, typography, drawing, graphic design, illustration, industrial design, advertising, animation, and electronic resources. Visual communication has been proven to be unique when compared to other verbal or written languages because of its more abstract structure. The interpretation of imagery is often compared to the set alphabets and words used in oral or written languages.

WRITTEN COMMUNICATION Communication refers to the sending, receiving, and sharing of information between two parties through various forms of media. Written communications are exchanges of information that involve written messages, either digitally or on paper. Written communications are beneficial because they do not require direct communication and they provide proof of an exchange in the event of an incident.

MASS COMMUNICATION Mass communication is the process of imparting and exchanging information through mass media to large population segments. It utilizes various forms of media as technology has made the dissemination of information more efficient. Primary examples of platforms utilized and examined include journalism and advertising. It is practiced through various channels known as mediums, which include radio, television, social networking, billboards, newspapers, magazines, books, film, and the Internet.

CONCLUSION Communication is an essential component of business. While communication is a natural part of the human experience, it’s important to consider how you will communicate in a positive and effective manner that aligns with your responsibilities and reputation as a business professional. When communication occurs in the cross-cultural context, extra caution is needed, given that different cultures have different norms regarding nonverbal communication, and different words will be interpreted differently across cultures.
