Guide Questions and Answers What part of the lungs does your model represents? -Each part of the model represents a certain part of the respiratory system. The 2 tubes or straws represent the bronchi, the small balloons represent the lungs, the bottle represents the chest cavity and the big balloon, or the cellophane represents the diaphragm. What happens when you pull down the balloon? -The balloon inflates. What happens when you pull down the balloon? -The balloon deflates.

How does the movement of the diaphragm cause the air to go in and out of the lungs? - When the diaphragm is pulled down/contracts, air will rush into the lungs. When the diaphragm is pulled up/relaxes air will be pushed out of the lungs. What will happen if you prick the balloon? - Air cannot rush to the balloon(lungs) because it has a hole. Breathing will not be possible because pressure is not contained inside the lungs.

Conclusion When the diaphragm contracts , air will rush into the lungs . When the diaphragm is relaxes air will be expelled out of the lungs. When the pressure outside is higher, air is forced into our lungs. When the lungs gain pressure from the air entering from the outside, air will be expelled out.
