Venous drainage of the brain Dr. Henock Negasi Radiology

Dural venous sinuses Dural venous sinus is composed of 2 groups. Superior group composed of straight, saggital and transverse. Basal group consists of cavernous, petrosal and sphenoparietal .

Superior sagital sinus Triangular in cross section Increase in size before backwards Drain to rt transverse sinus Variant; false empty delta sign

Inferior sagital sinus In the free margin of falx cerebri Joins vv of galen to become straight sinus

Transverse sinus Commence at torcular Lie on outer margin of tentorium Rt is dominant & larger Become sigmoid sinus at posterior petrous edge

Straight sinus Lies at the junction of falx & tentorium Torcular herophili ; venous confluence

Occipital sinus Drain from margins of foramen magnum Course superiorly from foramen magnum to torcula Not usually identified at angiography

Cavernous sinus Paired, situated on either side of pitutary fossa Recieves opthalmic veins & sphenoparietal sinuses Drain to sigmoid sinus via petrosal sinuses Contents; ica , cn 6, 3, 4

Superior petrosal sinus Situated at junction of tentorium & petrous bone Drain to transverse sinus

Inferior petrosal sinus Lie b/n the clivus & petrous apex Joins the jugular bulb

Sphenoparietal sinus Is medial extension of sylvian vein Drain to cavernous sinus Cources around the lesser sphenoid wing

Superficial cerebral vein Blood flows centrifugally Superior, middle, and inferior cerebral vein Sylvian ( superficial middle cerebral vein) Drain to cavernous sinus via sphenoparietal sinus Anastemotic veins ( trolard & labbe )

Deep cerebral veins Medullary vs subependymal Thalamostriate vv ; runs over thalamus – intercerebral vv Septal vv ; travels post. In septum pellucidum - icv

Cont … Basal vv of rosenthal Forms in sylvian fissure Travels in ambient cistern Drain in to vv of galen

Cont.. Internal cerebral vein Runs along roof of 3 rd ventricle in cistern of valum interpositum vein of galen Single midline vessel Originate under splenium of corpus callosum Drain to straight sinus

Posteriour fossa veins ant. Pontomesencephalic vv Runs on ant surface of pons & mid brain in relation to basilar aa Drains via petrosal veins to superior petrosal sinuses Posterior mesencephalic vv Runs around upper midbrain to drain to vv of galen

Cont.. Precentral cerebellar vv Arise b/n cerebellum & post. Midbrain Drain to vv of galen Sup & inf vermian vv Pontine vvs Inferior medullary vvs
